I need your opinion on this. Maybe it is just me, but I have been seeing a lot of new soldiers that have issues. For instance two new soldiers in my unit, one talks to himself loudly and says things that can be deemed as creepy and odd. Like Gomer Pile. The other soldier has severe anxiety to the point where he cannot even answer an NCO when spoken to, in or out of a formation. He does not talk to anyone actually, and if he does he says yes or no and looks down and looks around.

Are these issues skipped by MEPS? How would these soldiers react to combat situations? Are they really fit to be in our military? Or is this just me getting a couple soldiers in my unit that I think are weird?

Welcome to the Millennial population, Kids who's parents have told them they were special, perfect, snowflakes and never let them be affected by anything even remotely traumatic....
They hit boot camp and their whole world implodes, if they make it through that then we in the fleet get them and they have a chance.

Now its our turn to undo all the damage done by the PC society and TEACH them to be Men and Women. Train them to be the best in their / our fields. Mold them into Americas Future. This is why we advance in rank, why we are the Deck Plate Leadership. It is our Duty to help them grow beyond this naivety and childhood. While it can be stressful on us think back to your youth and of the people who helped you grow to be the Leader you are now.

I agree if they did not get enough hugs as a kid they should not be in the US military if they don't have the basic social skills and mental toughness. Eric calling basic training scene in this volunteer army some white Soldier mail take I support alcohol because he couldn't handle being in basic training. This was in the MTV generation 1994 drill sergeants didn't hit you they made me do do rifle drills and push-ups until you wanted to die and maybe you didn't get to eat your meal if you were the last person in line but that was only temporary. I'm sure over the decades we've always had people like this but it's the duty of everyone in Recruiting Command to screen these undesirables maybe they would do better in the Peace Corps.

This Millennial population (I maybe younger but I don't put myself in that group), doesn't understand the idea of discipline; they think that if they complain, whine and cry enough they will get their way. Realizing that it's never going to be that way in boot, they shut down due to the fact they can't cope with the intense change in their social life/personal, etc. A lot of mental issues have come from this group and it makes things hectic for those who 1) aren't apart of it and 2) those who are from it and how to progress in life.

The "you're a winner, no matter what" and giving out participation trophies doesn't not help with the idea of accepting failure and learning from mistakes.

I don't think its MEPS , it starts with a recruiter , what are they thinking when selecting individuals with disabilities? In my 19yrs of service I've seen some people that should of never been allowed to join and yet they somehow passed BCT ? I don't get it.

I always find it telling when a recruiter isn't returning my calls. Sometimes I wonder if they take the ASVAB for some of these recruits.

Exactly, MEPS only assures the recruit meets enlistment standards set by DoD.

SFC, as a recruiter it is not my job to medically disqualify an applicant, nor am I allowed to. MEPS hired medical doctors for that. If they meet basic qualifications for the recruiters to send them, we must, regardless of our opinion. We are not the medical professionals who do one on one interviews/inspections with these kids.

I worked in the brig so I definitely saw a lot of people like that - (and some asvab waivers as we'd like to say) but it definitely seems like most recruiters are more interested in their quotas than getting the best people.

In two decades of working with recruits, recruiters and recruiting, I never heard of a ASVAB waiver? Now the standard would change and there were times when someone might be able to enlist as a CAT IV but never allow someone to enlist with the ASVAB waived?

On the other side of this, some of the best soldiers were those with low ASVAB scores...you just needed to make sure you were specific in what they needed to do and how to do it. Vocational aptitude is how hard it is to train someone in certain things.

ASVAB waivers is a joking term for people who seem to have no common sense and no one understands how they were able to join the military.

Actually recruiters don’t have quotas, the stations do. I would know, I’m a current recruiter. And we are not medical professionals who are legally allowed to disqualify someone from a medical point of view because they are “different”. If they are qualified, we send them and the “medical” professionals will do their job and dq them.
