TACP here. We are considered part of the Battlefield Airmen/Special Warfare community. Very small percentage are assigned to SOCOM after an additional selection.

Well they are assigned to ODA, SEAL and MARSOC Teams and imbedded with 75TH, so yes they are considered SOF. I worked with a couple that were with ODA's in Afghanistan and they were on the team just like the 18's, had duty that supported and was part of the teams mission went out on every leader engagement and level one operation they had. So what is the problem by they way they are part of SOCOM, so again what is the problem. Now that TACP of today, not 70's,80's and 90's their training and selection and duties have changed some what.

As I said they do same duties on team as the 18's do, worked with one that was assigned as the over watch or as many people call sniper and this guy was good. I might like him a little as he let us shoot all the toys and gave us some training on them. Being SOF support on a JSOTF task force has it's perks as well.

I would also add this, people always want to talk carp about the past and the way things use to be and that's how we use to do it carp. Well bottom line things units and mission sets have changed since 911, new units special task forces all kinds of operations and missions and also how MOS's and rates have changed the way they train and are used in real world operations. So to use well we did like this is old school and gone. I kind of understand why a Nam guy or some trained in the 70's and 80's might question this, but their training and selection has changed.

SCPO (Join to see) I was talking to a retired Vietnam vet who was a Cavalry officer on the phone concerning this question. He said no that Tactical Air controller people are not Special Operations. I thought, let's ask the Air Force personnel. I don't know what you mean by that statement. I decided to take a neutral stance and ask USAF personnel.
