I am a medic in a medical readiness unit, and I’ve always heard that when a soldier has a medically necessary boot (such as a splinting device or a cast) that the soldier is authorized to wear the APFU for the duration of boot-wearing. I’ve even heard some argue that the ACU isn’t authorized whatsoever with a boot. I have dug through AR 670-1 and AR 40-501 but can’t find anything that even comes close to addressing this. Ideas?

This is wear common sense would have to come in. The Soldier has to wear clothes. The Soldier has to wear the boot. If they are required to wear the boot at all times while going thru recovery, but aren't authorized OCP or APFU while wearing the boot, then what are they supposed to wear? Is the Command going to let them come to work wearing civilian attire and the boot?

To clarify, I am saying that some say that the APFU is the only uniform authorized to wear with a boot, while others say that either uniform is authorized

SSG (Join to see) - Roger. I'm totally tracking your dilemma. Which is why some Commanders need to have that common sense. That is what my questions were referring to. I should have conveyed that better.

If Dr. said to wear a medical boot to help it heal or sneakers. Then NO RANK can say otherwise not even the Highest rank in any branch of the military. It would be a law suit that nobody will want to be involved in. I know this as a Navy Hospital Corpsman and stood by Navy & Marine Corps alike.

I had a soft shoe profile and wore sneakers with ACU.. and would not present the profile to anyone who challenged me... except my chain of direct command..Rember their are no rules unless someone catches you... then you ignore it.
