I recently attended an Air Force Boot Camp Graduation and I saw an Air Force SSgt (E-5) and an Army SSgt (E-6) each wearing an Meritorious Service Medal (Both with less than 12 years service). Now I know there are some difference between branches of service, but this was very surprising considering in the Marine Corps there is a very high standard required to receive the award. Opinions please.

Jesus H Fuck. So many douchebags here, I'm suddenly reminded why I separated. If someone earned something (or even was awarded it without "earning" it), how about you just be happy for the person and move on with your life? And even if you felt like *you* were passed-over for an award that went to someone that did not deserve it..... well tough shit you little goddamn pansy. Your superiors obviously did not agree with you. Get over it, and get over yourselves.

Not just this medal..... I am a Marine Vet currently living outside of Fort Hood, Texas..... there must be at least one or two Thousand Bronze Star license plates running around here.

I've seen e-3's with Bronze and Silver Stars with no additional coverage ie V's or Oak's, Medals don't mean shit any more.

I've seen shitbag SNCOs that couldn't form a beret or field strip their weapon if their life depended on it.... being in the military doesn't* mean shit anymore*? Grammar and spelling ftw. It is good to know that even before I had to deal with high-horse asshat SNCOs that wouldn't even pass a modern English exam, those before me were also dealing with high-horse asshat SNCOs that wouldn't even pass a modern English exam. Especially ones that managed to supposedly make it to E-8 but not actually retire? That's worse than the fatties that couldn't pass a PT test imo. And almost as bad as the fatty E-8s that couldn't pass a PT test.

It's not really surprising though, that there were douchebags in the service before me that would immediately judge someone's worth based on what's on their chest, and immediately discredit said worth based on what's on their sleeve (or collar). I always thought that people became less salty and less douchey after separating though. Guess you're just super salty about hitting E-8 and not actually retiring? Yeah, I would be pissed too if I had stayed in long enough to make E-8 but then didn't actually retire. Seriously, talk about a life wasted. Hopefully you at least got a GI Bill out of that!

TO BE AWARDED A 'BRONZE STAR' IN THE CORPS, ONE HAD TO DIE OR ALMOST. ARMY LT. , A FRIEND, GOT ONE FOR ADMIN. DUTIES WHILE IN COMBAT. MET ONE CORPORAL IN THE CORPS WHOM WAS AWARDED A 'BRONZE'.....A FLANKING MOVEMENT AGAINST AN ENTRENCHED ENEMY MACHINE NEST. THEY WERE STARTING TO MOVE ON THAT SAME FLANK. HE STATED HE AND HIS BUDDY WERE 'LUCKY'...MORE LIKE BLESSED !!

Many of the WWII veterans were discharged from the service with the award of the ruptured duck and a 214. A little known provision came to me one day as I was reading obscure regulations. Veterans from WWII that were awarded the CIB were eligible for the award of the Bronze Star. I wrote my Father-in-Law up and he was awarded the Bronze Star for his service. Oddly enough, it seemed to mean a lot more to my Mother-in-Law than he husband but it was worth the effort to me.

Metals are not awarded by rank, they awarded for achievements.

If you truly believe that Chief you are living in a fantasy world or you only saw awards properly being awarded. In over twenty years of service I only witnessed higher awards going to higher rank and longer times in service.

They must have accomplished a meritorious achievement.
I made rank real fast in the Marines by Meritorious Promotions.

When I was in I witnessed many category of awards that I believed to being watered down.

Wow, all during that whole time you were in? I mean you made it to E-3, so you must've been a lifer, right? Lots of experience in seeing "watered down" awards I'm sure.

I wasnt awarded one after 21 yrs of service because i had been at the unit 13 months. My OIC and and CommChief were upset because they felt i had done more in 13 months than my prdecessor.in 3 years but rules are rules and i retired witha Navy Comm. I only found this out after i had retired.
