Is the Government, for civilians, and the DOD, for the military, truly interested in our eating habits, what we eat, and how much we eat?

Look everywhere and the Federal Government is literally invading our eating habits, what we eat, and how much we eat. Reminder: Mayor Bloomberg and his 16-ounce limit on soft drinks in NYC (that was ruled unconstitutional). McD's and restaurants everywhere being required to post nutritional and caloric values. This is happening on posts and bases, and on ship chow lines, everywhere we work and live and go to school. Is it too invasive or is our government REALLY concerned about yours and my individual overall health???

A few thoughts:
- It is a documented fact that Americans are getting fatter and out of shape.
- This is quickly becoming a national security issue in that our pool of military eligible personnel is shrinking which affects recruit quality.
- Overall quality of life and health are directly impacted by exercise and eating trends of the population both from a micro and macro perspective.
- I think the government is on solid ground when it educates, informs, and recommends. It is on far less solid ground when it mandates (school lunches or NYC).

SCPO Bowerman, I refer you to my fourth point above to answer your question. I think the government is on solid ground when it educates, informs, and recommends. It is on far less solid ground when it mandates. As for the school lunch program, I don't recall the FLOTUS ever being elected or appointed. Begs the question of what authority she has or should have (should be exactly NO authority).

COL Jason Smallfield, PMP, CFM, CM - I saw it. I was trying to draw very specific attention to someone who was neither elected nor hired by HHS or DOEd to dictate what millions of school kids eat!!!

Gentlemen: It might be my imagination, but we didn't seem to have these problems until the Government in all it's "wisdom"... started sticking it nose in these things... maybe Government just needs to just BUTT OUT and take care of those things it is specifically mandated to do under the constitution... and not keep continually extending (or maybe I should say "overextending") their preview to everything under the sun, especially things that are none of their damn business! Jus' sayin'...

i am generally not a fan of more government and its oversight...however.
two things americans don't do well is our physical health and our finances

Even if that's is true MAJ;... it becomes the Government's business because...? It seems to me the best thing the Government could work at doing it perfecting it's own "diet" (budget) it really needs to do what is necessary to limit it's "appetite" for our money and "tighten it's belt" and learn to live within it's means... just like "we the people do"...
