Is the recently announced Operation Inherent Resolve Ribbon a real thing?

I read in the Navy Times that there is going to be a new ribbon/medal for those who served during Operation Inherent Resolve from all branches. There was a listing of qualifications (of course) but is this a real thing or is scuttlebutt?

It's like Pokémon, every time you think you've collected them all, they make new ones!

Ok. Makes sense about the OIR ribbon vs. GWOT Exp ribbon issue. I gotta talk to my previous command about if I qualify for this. Thanks for finding this!

It's just I have GWOT and if I stayed longer on my deployment (end of my EAOS) I would have got my GWOT Exp. If your command is in support of OIR and you have the GWOT Exp; do you get one or the other or both?

You get one or the other. You cannot wear two ribbons for the same defined service.

You might be able to qualify for both. Example: Servicemember is deployed to Kuwait for 120 days, and forward deploys to Iraq/Syria for 60 days, then redeploys back to home station. Different periods of qualifying service, though in the same deployment. This is how it would be worded in any personal award (achievement, commendation, etc.) or an annual evaluation. This scenario has happened to some guys in my unit. So I suggest getting with your personnelist or command section if you can't find what you're looking for in DoD instructions or even your service's publications. Hope this helps some.

If it is in the Navy or any of the Military Times.... it must be real. Military Times is as legit as the New York Post!

I am joking of course... but I do recall a story that happened many years ago. I sat on a promotion board for Army Reservists (we were in a joint component unit). We were still on the old DA 2-1 system. For those of you who do not know, it was the same as the Officer/Enlisted Records Brief (ORB/ERB), only filled in by a typewriter (an ancient form of data entry). Anyways, under the AWARDS section, most Soldiers had the "Cold War Service Medal" typed in it, then lined out by hand. When I asked why this was, the Unit Administrator saw an article in the Army Times about a proposal for that award, and then just added it to all who met the criteria. When he found he was wrong, he just lined through them (which was an acceptable form of correction at the time).

I don't understand the hatred towards OIR campaign award.... Only thing I don't understand is since we didn't initiate into a new country we shoulda just rolled with Iraq freedom again....

I think you still can get both but depending if you had it before the OIE was available...

It's one or the other unless you've done subsequent qualifying deployments since 2014.
