My question is that if soldiers are allowed to wear the black barets instead of the pc because I was on post the other day and a Cooke of my Buddies where wearing them and it was my understanding that it was only on ceremonial purposes and on dress uniforms

Why would anyone wear it unless they had to?

I was in the Reserves when the BB became the authorized headgear. By the time my Unit got issued them, I was already wearing my Drill Sgt Hat and NEVER had to wear that piece of crap. :)

Our Guard division we had to wear them constantly when they first came out. Field, motorpool, wash racks, etc. We were not allow to put them in our cargo pocket at the time either. Most people's berets looked like crap in a matter of a day. Active duty units then ragged on us for having crappy looking berets. Their units were smart enough order them worn when their troops weren't working in dirty environments. They are worthless.

Depends on the unit, really. Most units go with the PC for daily wear. Other units still use the beret as daily wear.

Usually if people are wearing them instead of the PC it is authorized or directed by that units command.
I'm fairly positive just wearing it in lieu of the patrol cap violates guidance in all the 670-1 resources.

Check the regs though. AR 670-1, DA PAM 670-1

I served with 66th MI GRP in Germany when the Black Beret came out for wear by all soldiers (no longer just the Rangers, who have since switched to tan). Afterwards I served in 206th MI BN (Ft. Gordon), 3 ID (Ft. Stewart), and 344th MI BN (Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo TX (AIT Instructor)). Ft Gordon still had us wear the PC for daily wear, all the others I was with, the PC was only worn for Field Duty (in Garrison it was still the Beret for daily wear). I retired in 2012, so I don't know what has changed or to what extent, but as I understand, it was always under the Post Commanders discretion as to what headgear was authorized for wear and when.
