Is there a time in grade exception for a 79S packet?

I am currently on recruiting duty, just hit my one year mark in USAREC. I have been looking up qualifications for 79S and I read that SSGs may not have more than 2 years TIG. When I am able to drop my packet, I will be at 2.5 years TIG. Is there an exception for TIG?

Technically, you can ask for a waiver, however as it's been pointed out the prerequisites were changed to promotable E5 only back in October.
If you're only one year into recruiting, then you have two more left to go. By then you should be getting looked at for SFC in your MOS at least once, if not twice by then.
If you are a good fit for 79S you would be getting promoted almost immediately after the Career Counselor course and wouldn't have time to develop as a counselor, that's why the prerequisite is E5(P).

There is always a exception to any policy. You can submit your exception and final determination will be made based on the reasoning for the exception. Hope that answers your question.

Thank you very much for the response SFC Aldana. I will do just that.

I was in the same boat. SSG with 2.5 years TIG and almost 2 years of retention NCO time. Went to 79S Branch CSM and he said no. As SFC Boyd said it is now only e-5(p). Hate to be a downer but don't expect it to happen.

SSG Shawn North The concept of an exception to policy is exactly that. Am exception to a standing policy. Here's the policy, I want an exception. You can literally request an exception to any Army policy, which is what the question was. Now if they deny the exception request, that's another story, but requesting an exception always exists

I have a question in regard to packet submission. Has anyone been required to go to a retention NCO board before they could receive a LOR from the command career counselor?

SGT (Join to see) - it is all up to the person giving the LOR. What they are asking is not unreasonable.
