The Pentagon's chief of Combat Testing announced that the LCS ships had vulnerabilities. The USS Fort Worth is now engaged in Exercises off the Phillipines. Is it prudent to announce the vulnerabilities of a platform or weapons system? Your thoughts?

Known vulnerabilities of the LCS have been out there for some time. I can only speculate that the media push is a public attempt to guilt trip Congress into a fix. My concern is we may have a case of trying to fix the unfixable.

I do believe that is why they are referred to by some as Little Crappy Ships

You are right, Capt. Ball. As with every other half assed weapons system that is produced by the MIC, it will be fixed and deployment will continue for decades, adding to the same coffers of the MIC and jobs for those promoting them.

The LCS's have had big problems from the start. The Navy doesn't want them but certain congress critters are forcing the issue. Billions of dollars have been lost on these ships. Their biggest vulnerability is being underway, which for those of you in Rio Linda, is a bad trait for a naval vessel. The real crappy part is once a Sailor quals on one of these pieces of floating excrement they're stuck in that community.

Hit that nail on the head. That is also why we are worrying about how to come up with gender neutral ratings, using "green " fuel, and other social experiments. LCDR Matlow is also right about it being designed by committee. Initially it was going to be reconfigurable but you had to go into a major port to reconfigure it . That concept has been around for some time but no one can ever come up with a hard and fast list of core capabilities It was also supposed to be for littoral operations but what the draft requirements were for littoral operations became a problem as well. Armament was another issue. Some said it will be operating with a carrier group but then it also was supposed to operate independently. You cannot operate in littoral waters with the defenses she has, at least not for long. If only it was as easy to get what we want rather than what some feather merchant says we need. Under the current acquisition rules we cannot specify too tightly what we want but we can sure spend the hell out of taking what we get and modifying it to what we wanted in the first place.

That's a low blow for those serving on them. Big Navy is getting media attention for something. Most likely they are trying to get unscheduled upgrades or maybe even trying to go the way of my beloved Kiowa. Either way, no bueno, Godspeed Navy.
