Is it legal for a Commander to require you to turn over your CAC to use a latrine?

That CAC is government property. Not yours.

...So, you have never turned your CAC over for plates at a range, or a short term borrowing of a tool from the maintenance shop? There are a few here that have already said it, but the CAC is not your property and must be surrendered if order so by command.

100% legal. Your CAC is government owned and required to be surrendered by you any time ordered by your chain of command.

Also, not an uncommon practice just about everywhere when you borrow something short term. Holding onto your CAC as collateral is common for getting spare keys from Staff duty, lawn equipment, and all kinds of other things that people conveniently forget to return. I also don't think it's illegal to do on the civilian side either, but I'm not a lawyer.

I'm Reserve, so I frequent my local post for the shopping privileges while in civilian capacity. The one I frequent is also a TRADOC location.

I don't know, that is a good question. I don't know about turning over my CaC card but, posting of a guard would work as it would get old and they would start to be cleaned! Good ole fashion GI Party sounds like what is needed!

This is almost funny. Can they, yamaybe (meant the soelling)? It is a bit far fetched, signing should be enough as your signature subjects you to disciplinary action should you faile to return the key and ensure the Latrobe is squared away.

I would not rock the boat over it. Your ID should be safe, if lost your commander has to Sign approval for a replacement.

You could ask the duty desk to sign for my ID, see the potential for a silly circle.

Should be easy to catch, have barracks orderly, check latrines after each us. When it checks out messed up, the one that just left did it, and you have the culprit. Give the barracks orderly something to do besides lie around, too. LOL

Funny story that helps you understand your commander’s frustration: the 100 and Worst got locked out of the showers at Camp Udari (Kuwait) right before we invaded Iraq because nasty assed people like you were shitting in them. That’s the sort of bullshit your Commander and 1SG are dealing with, so lose the attitude and hand over that CAC, son!
