So my company has latrine’s that everyone uses, well the soldiers who are supposed to clean them don’t always clean them. So what my COC decided to do was lock the latrine’s and you have to turn over your CAC to get the key. Now I know that on the civilian side that is illegal, is that allowed in the military? I’ve never heard of a place doing something like this

That CAC is government property. Not yours.

SFC Kelly Fuerhoff - if it's being done at the direction of the Commander, then that guard is the Commanders reporesentative for that duty, much like CQ or Staff Duty.

...So, you have never turned your CAC over for plates at a range, or a short term borrowing of a tool from the maintenance shop? There are a few here that have already said it, but the CAC is not your property and must be surrendered if order so by command.

On a personal note, kind of a crappy thing to do... ha

I’ve never turned my CAC in for anything besides a UA. As for maintenance I am in the maintenance platoon so if I need a tool I just grab it

SPC (Join to see) , SFC Kelly Fuerhoff ... I guess experiences will differ... lol... I've never been on a range and not had to turn my CAC over for something... plates, demo, something. But it doesn't change that it is still not our property and can be requested by command at any time.

100% legal. Your CAC is government owned and required to be surrendered by you any time ordered by your chain of command.

Also, not an uncommon practice just about everywhere when you borrow something short term. Holding onto your CAC as collateral is common for getting spare keys from Staff duty, lawn equipment, and all kinds of other things that people conveniently forget to return. I also don't think it's illegal to do on the civilian side either, but I'm not a lawyer.

Is it legal for a Commander to require you to turn over your CAC to use a latrine?

This doesn't sound right to me. Personally, I'd have a massive GI party to get the message received. If anything, run this by JAG to see what they say

I'm Reserve, so I frequent my local post for the shopping privileges while in civilian capacity. The one I frequent is also a TRADOC location.

Anyway...................... Post SGM closed down the restrooms in the shopping area, and I had my two little ones with me. I was pretty pissed, and nothing I could do about it.

So yea it happens. The CAC thing is just a little flavor of treating kids like kids.

I don't know, that is a good question. I don't know about turning over my CaC card but, posting of a guard would work as it would get old and they would start to be cleaned! Good ole fashion GI Party sounds like what is needed!

This is almost funny. Can they, yamaybe (meant the soelling)? It is a bit far fetched, signing should be enough as your signature subjects you to disciplinary action should you faile to return the key and ensure the Latrobe is squared away.

I would not rock the boat over it. Your ID should be safe, if lost your commander has to Sign approval for a replacement.

You could ask the duty desk to sign for my ID, see the potential for a silly circle.

Should be easy to catch, have barracks orderly, check latrines after each us. When it checks out messed up, the one that just left did it, and you have the culprit. Give the barracks orderly something to do besides lie around, too. LOL

It’s not in the barracks, it’s in our place of duty where he locked the latrine.

How bout your nasty ass learns to clean up after your nasty self? Short answer is your CAC is fair game because it is government property.

Funny story that helps you understand your commander’s frustration: the 100 and Worst got locked out of the showers at Camp Udari (Kuwait) right before we invaded Iraq because nasty assed people like you were shitting in them. That’s the sort of bullshit your Commander and 1SG are dealing with, so lose the attitude and hand over that CAC, son!

I think I wrote it weird. My actual question is, is it legal for my company to lock the latrine?

Yes. And civilians do this all the time, too. I have had to ask for the key for MANY different restrooms.
