Is too late to ask for transfer to IRR after you sign a national guard contract as a prior service member?

I recently got out of active duty. Served one contract ( three years) I switched from active to the national guard. However they told me if i go that route, I had to do the remaining of my 8 years in the guard( so 4 and a half years contract). Back then I was sure of my decision. Now I have become a full time student And I’m loving it. Therefore I want to be fully focused on my education. However the guard is already getting conflicted with my student schedule, I feel limited. Since I already sign the NG contract ,Is it to late to ask for transfer to the IRR instead of completing my remaining time in the guard?

Check with your unit about ING status that could put things on hold for 1-2 years while you focus on being a student.

It is too late. You can ask to do a Split Unit Training Assembly (SUTA) E (before drill) or SUTA K after drill. Another option is to ask for Inactive National Guard (ING). ING however is limited to ones year time. Whatever you do don't go Absent Without Leave (AWOL) as you can lose all these benefits you are currently enjoying.

Ask your Unit about doing SUTA's before drill or after drill to ease your schedule.
