Just as the "regs" don't tell you that you cant wear a pink t-shirt, they don't need to tell you that you cant wear a flag on your backpack. AR 670-1 is clear, bags must be black and or the camo color of your duty uniform. Prior HRC slides depicted examples as well. Any logos are not authorized. Save the flag for where it belongs, on your right shoulder, do what the CSM says and stop trying to push every little thing you may see as a gray area. Nuf said.

Former Sergeant here. I can only speak from my experience. The correct response is "Roger, Segeant Major" then make the suggested correction. I don't want to do the paper work or research if i get put on blast because of an uppity Soldier on my team. End of the day, I'm accountable for my Soldier's behavior. And today could be a whole like of Article 91 if a senior has a hair trigger.

I would venture to guess, just take your gerber slice it off of your backpack, pocket the patch, and move out smartly. If you don't like it, hey, you joined the wrong nation's military. But hey, who's judging?

I could see it being a violation if you were wearing the backpack while in uniform. If not in uniform, then it sounds like just another Sergeant Major making $h!t up and calling it a rule.

It doesn't matter how you see it, it matters what the standards are. Not sure what kind of CSM/SGMs around you, but its a group of professionals and hardly one to generalize. Your perception of E9s is disappointing and speaks more about yourself than the trained Army CSMs/SGMs in my corps.

No sir, it's based off the US Flag code. The small scale flags are prescribed for wear on uniform sleeves only, and it prescribes the size and orientation. That is why it's found in the 670-1 under uniform wear and no where else.

MAJ (Join to see) - There was actually a 6 hour block of instruction on police call at the USASMA. Imagine if you will 700+ MSGs and SGMs to include foreign students at double arm interval policing the Biggs Army Airfield AO. Some folks were absolutely indignant while some of us had a hoot hamming it up.

CSM, I'm not in the army any longer. Not since April 2017. MAJ Pete Mitchell is just kind of a joking pen name sort of thing. It's Maverick from Top Gun's movie name. I'm just a 32 years old e4 nobody with a fake knee. I've never deployed, never done jack. I was always considered an outsized personality. I started out the army in the 18x program and found that I have bones with the structural capability of a cooked spaghetti noodle. But, people considered me some sort of savage in the pog side of the army. I'm probably considered as unpromotable as anyone due to my personality and thoughts on what the army ought be.

Justin, you need to understand that the wear and placement of the flag on the uniform as noted in the 670-1 derives from the US flag code, which prescribes the dimensions, orientation and general location of the flag patch on uniforms. The code does not provide for the flag patch to be displayed any where else. While seemingly petty in enforcement, the CSM is correct.

Generally flags designed to be worn on the right sleeve are incorrect to be worn anyplace else as the flag code states, "Union is to the front and on it's own right." When we take a flag worn on the right sleeve, if presented on a bag, it must be in vertical presentation, not horizontal to be correct. If this flag is worn on the bag horizontally and was designed for right shoulder, then the union is to the left which is wrong IAW chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq)
