ISIS/ISIL/DAESH and the Taliban have declared Jihad on one another. And there was much rejoicing!

What do you think of this? Will they attrite one another? Will they further destabilize the region? Is this good or is it bad?

I expected ISIS to burn themselves out, but this is even better.

So the way we work, we are secretly funding both sides right?

It brings to mind what the Allies thought of Operation Barbarossa once it was unleashed in WWII, pitting Nazi Germany against Soviet Russia: It's a shame that they both can't lose.

CPO Greg Frazho oh but they can both lose! significant enough attrition can ruin them both in their own spheres of influence!

Now the thing that is going to be most important is NOT to endorse a side. Historically, we've created some of these problems ourselves. In the 1970s-1980s, we armed the Taliban to fight the Russians. The we armed the Iraqi fighters to fight against ISIS. They fell, then we armed the Syrian rebels to fight ISIS...then they joined ISIS. We fail to understand that "the enemy of my enemy is not my friend", especially in a region where the tribal alliances can easily shift the tides. Kurds jump in?? OH NO, we can't fight with the Kurds...let's help ISIS. They are both well financed and should be perfectly capable of buying weapons and technologies from Russia and China. Let's just back off and let the two fight each other for a while....give our troops a breather to enjoy being home and remember what normal life looks like.

CPT Butler

UAVs will now finally be able to pay for themselves!

Step 1: Fly over the AOR and catch live footage of ISIS vs Taliban in action
Step 2: Pay Per View
Step 3: $$$$
Step 4: Save the A-10 and U-2

I see no downsides in this turn of events!

TSgt (Join to see) This is my favorite answer on this post so far. It sounds like a dystopian movie. And a sound financial plan for the military.

This is actually problematic for Afghanistan. This will only increase the level of violence across the country, which will in turn increase instability, which will increase the optempo of the Afghan security forces. Also, the instability will feed into the narrative that the Afghan government cannot control the country, which will further erode Afghan citizen's faith in the central Afghan government...but both these groups know this and welcome the chaos.
