With this latest threat, how concerned should the military be about its collective presence in Social Media? Are we going to see more attention paid to social footprints and OPSEC? Are more focused sites like RP a better option than the larger FaceTwit sites?

I am curious to see what actions the commands are going to take with this threat. I invite a discussion about this.

Why should I care any more about what some extremist twit posts on the internet than what the guy down the street posts? I think we empower the terrorists by paying so much public attention to them and repeating their message of terror a hundred fold in our news segments and security reports. We should publicly ignore terrorists, down play the hype, and address the matter below the public's radar as quiet professionals.

You do realize they got that info when they hacked a federal government database and not off of social media right? Let's not get panicked over something that isn't an issue to begin with.

Adam, three guys live within my area, and one guy looks like me, so it has potential with the crazies. I have a CC and have always taken care since of my affiliation and spending a lot of time out the wire, but looking like one of the pictures adds to it. See if you can be mistaken for a picture and think of the crazy that might think the same. Trying growing a mustache because you do have a doppelganger. Best to play it safe we live in crazy times.

What the heck are you talking about CPT Pedro Meza? What does anything that you just wrote have anything to do with OPSEC and social media? I hate it that you look like one of these guys, but that is no reason to give in and allow terrorists to do just that, terrorize you into staying off of social media or going out. As for the rest of your post I'm having a really hard time making heads or tails out of what point you're making other than you either look like one of the military members listed or ISIS. I'm not sure which you were referring to.

Sorry, you're incorrect in saying a government database was hacked. All info on this list was collected from open sources (not necessarily social media, but additional sites like Yellow Pages, etc.). There is no evidence to suggest any government entity has been compromised.

It would be interesting to see what type of knee jerk reaction they launch because of this. I'm certain it will be overkill. What would be better would be if they notify all of the 100 service members who were on the list and actually analyze how and where their information was harvested from, then devise a plan of action. That might actually have a chance of minimizing if not preventing it from occurring in the future. Due to the nature of social media it will never be 100% but it could be negligible.

I think it best the way we did here posted the name and pictures for Brothers and Sister to take care of Brother and Sisters. Remember what happened prior to 911 there were agents following leads but told to back off because higher management did not believe them. On the streets the saying is don't get caught sleeping. I am grateful for the post of the website here.

We should remember that an overreaction is exactly what they are trying for.

If I get to kill another piece of worthless animal, here at home, I will ensure I piss on him, pour pork blood on him, and post a video showing that on youtube. I was upset my name did not make it to the cut.

One should always pay CLOSE attention to personal OPSEC. While deployed, we burned mail items that had our address on them, don't post anything on bulletin boards (the physical kind) that identifies you or anyone else....

Back home now that I'm merely a dysfunctional veteran, I have my Facebook pretty well locked down to the public. In fact, I wouldn't have one if I wasn't required to.

And this is how the USMC responds....

Military community mocks threat from Islamic State group

I think "Molon labe" applies.

ISIS, be my guest. I am always armed. So are the people around me. Feel free to take a shot, but know that you will be unable to receive your 72 virgins after we kill you. There are no virgins in hell.

As we are continuing to wrap our heads around this situation with ISIS, which has spawned from the Arab spring over the last several years I have to look back to history. I feel that the answer to the MIDDLE EAST is the "Marshal Plan". Europe torn apart led by a psychotic narcissitic bigot killing people right and left. Then pan to Japan where they were killing without mercy. We decided after the war to stand up bases and reform these countries. These countries were blown up by nuclear bombs and total destruction. Look at these countries now. The difference in the Middle East is OIL. Lets be honest Japan and Germany didn't have oil. Somehow we maintained somewhat of a occupation. Japan and Germany are 2 of the strongest countries in the world NOW.

I feel that if we look at some accepted norms in the middle east as alien we can address these issues. For starters women are beautiful, strong, and intelligent. By covering these women and denying them RIGHTS you are alien to this world. By disrespecting and destroying religious and historical artifacts like savages you are alien. Most of all if you kill and use death in a public forum to recruit you are alien.

Here is the ANSWER that no one wants to say out loud. Set up bases in the middle east and keep them in place until these situations stabilize which will take decades if we are lucky. If we don't invest for the long term we will be dealing with this all of the time.
