I ran into two NCOs wearing undershirts outside and told them they could not go into the px and had to change as per 8th army regulations. I asked one if he was a Soldier and he replied "I'm an NCO" and it made me wonder, when and why did that become a disparity? Why do so many NCO's and Officer's not think of themselves as Soldiers?

I think it stems from the connotation of the term Soldier.

Many will take the word Soldier as Lower Enlisted (i.e. "Let me get a group of soldiers together" usually refers to a group of E1-E4).

Then again it also depends on the tone of the response. I have seen many NCOs who think they are above others simply because of the velcro on their chest and refuse to be named "soldier" because they feel they are better than that.

Shouldn't the 2LT be at parade rest while this conversation is ongoing? I'm thinking the 2LT needs to be adjusted......seriously doesn't AR 670-1 handle this situation? OR was it BR-549? I get them confused so many times....

LT's tend to hold very non-vital roles, it almost seems like the Army makes up Job's for them where they pretty much don't serve a purpose. Platoon Leader, XO, OIC of whatever S-Shop etc... (Pretty much just managing hand receipts anyways) I also noticed its not ever worth remembering their names. They change up and move LT's around too often.

Im not talking about PL's in the Combat Arms btw

SGT Suraj Dave Interesting comment! I agree. However, if the newly minted O's didn't do those non-vital jobs, guess who might be taken from their job to do that non-vital one - yep, us enlisted.

Like any position or office in the civilian world most people have to grow into it. Most generals probably didn't start out as Lt Col's....but I'm guessing here. I know every Admiral I've ever met all started out as Ensigns (O-1 for you non-Navy types) and I'm sure most of them had one of those non-vital jobs sometime in their career.

The issue is those "non-vital" jobs shouldn't exist. We don't need an NCOIC and an OIC, that's 2 people doing 1 persons job. Horribly inefficient. I don't see why an SNCO cant run the personnel and operations.

On my most recent deployment, I was the senior medic in a platoon. Our PL was taken away at JRTC for another job. He never deployed with us. It wasn't a loss to us at all really. Our PSG stepped up and took over the hand receipts, Us as NCO's began planning the patrol's, and during meetings with the BC our PSG went instead of our non-existent LT. Everything worked out, we made it happen, and it wasn't even hard. Infact, we had fun doing his job. Planning patrols/overwatch and making power points, etc... Completely replaceable.

Yep....a good NCO can do it. The military today, especially the professional core / cadre, is not the same type of military that existed several centuries ago. Our enlisted are well educated compared to those several centuries ago for one.....
