Not impossible, but very tough and competitive. I've seen guys resign a commission to get on AGR, then, after they prove themselves, get their commission back.
You met want to try a title 10 job in DC or such. Make a name for yourself and your state will notice.

Funny. Since I've seen quite a few do it. They have went to OCS as AGR enlisted then interviewed and hired into an O position. I've seen some direct commission that were AGR enlisted after interviewing and being hired into an O position.
Each state is different.

CPT (Join to see) - Guard AGR slots are very difficult to get. Even if they've advertised a position available to fill, likely its already taken & they know who's going to get it. The position advertisement is just a formality, as they have to do it by law. Army Reserve slots are centralized and any Active Duty, Reservist, or National Guard Soldier can apply for a Reserve AGR slot.
Army Reserve AGR is still competitive, but if you have a decent file, with good evaluations & all military schooling knocked out... you have a good shot at getting picked up. So Army Reserve AGR is easier on the Officer or Enlisted side to get than a National Guard side in my opinion. A caveat to the Reserve AGR is you must already hold the MOS for them to bring you on, i.e. if you have a Combat Arms MOS- you will not get picked up in the Reserves. But, if you have Supply/Logistics, Engineer, Intel, MP, etc. you'll have a decent shot of getting picked up.
Now if you know the right people in the Guard or held the right positions, then you can be in like Flynn..... :)

I think it is easier to find an AGR slot in the guard vs reserves. Reserves rely on traditional members and ARTs to carry the unit. Guard units hire more AGR's and have a few Technicians onboard. It will vary from unit-to-unit.

In your opinion/experience, are the Officer AGR positions really as few and far between as people say?
