I have been asked to sit in on a job interview board, for a position that works with me from time to time. In the interview all of the candidates are asked the same questions. Some canidates show in up in person, and some, due to the fact we hire nationally, phone in. In the last two days Ihave have actually asked a question, and heard the person typing on their computer to look up the correct answer. Mind you this is after a long pause, and a lot of "Errr, uhhhh, I think I know this...." I can hear the keyboard in the background. Then wham bam they know all four parts of the answer. Their are several of us on a panel, we all looked at each other like "you are kidding me right." For me, this is a question of integrity, I have more respect for you if you say "I don't know" then cheat. I lost respect for two of the potential applicants. They lost all integrity, and respect by cheating. Yes we can hear it, when you type.

That's a downside to knowledge-based questions.

I work in software. You could probably google "binary search tree" and tell me about it fairly quickly. You could probably google "AVL tree" and then discuss it, as well, probably pointing out the property of an AVL tree being self-balancing. But if I present you with a scenario in which a good solution is to use some sort of tree-like data structure in order sort data as you store it in memory, _but I don't mention anything about trees_, then you're gonna be googling for a bit. And another bit. And some more. And we're done. But if you have a clue what's what, you'll be saying something meaningful rather early on, I think.
