The Cohen Veterans Network:
The Cohen Veterans Network is a nationwide network of non-profit clinics dedicated to providing accessible, low-cost mental health care to active duty service members, post 9/11 Veterans and their loved ones. We believe this most deserving population has earned the right to compassionate, high-quality care and strive to provide that support regardless of role, branch, or time service and regardless of discharge status or one’s ability to pay. Our local clinic serving Kentucky Veterans and their families is the Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Centerstone, and although located in Clarksville, TN, we offer all services including individual, family and couples counseling via telehealth, breaking down the distance barrier to care.

Elizabeth Dole Foundation:

Our mission is to strengthen and empower American military caregivers and their families by raising public awareness, driving research, championing policy, and leading collaborations and programs that make a significant impact on their lives. Every day, these dedicated chapter leaders work to ensure that yesterday’s warriors have the resources at hand to succeed in their academic journey and beyond.

Easterseals:
We serve veterans and their families in Southwest Ohio, Eastern Indiana and Northern Kentucky. Our Military & Veteran Services team is 100% staffed by veterans with nearly 70 years of combined active duty experience, including deployments and combat tours. With these common core of experiences we share with the vets we serve, we know first-hand the complex challenges they and their families face. In addition, we understand the journey each person who has served our country takes as they transition from Active or reserve status back into the civilian sector because we have also made that same journey. We are proud to provide our services at no cost to the veteran or their family members, and we live by the same ethos we held on the battlefield – we leave no veteran behind – period. Regardless of discharge status, disability, or personal circumstances, we treat EVERY veteran with honor, dignity, and respect. We work with them to identify their needs and empower them to overcome their barriers, and secure sustainable employment to turn their lives around. https://www.easterseals.com/gc/our-programs/military-veteran-services/

TAPS:
The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) provides compassionate care and survivor support services for the families of America’s fallen military heroes. About Blue Star Families
The families of our all-volunteer military make unprecedented sacrifices these days to serve our country. Blue Star Families was founded by military spouses in 2009 to empower these families to thrive as they serve. We're committed to strengthening military families by connecting them with their neighbors – individuals and organizations – to create vibrant communities of mutual support. We believe we're all stronger when we take care of one another.

Our groundbreaking research is raising the nation's awareness of the unique challenges of military family life. With the help of neighbors across the country, Blue Star Families is overcoming the isolation and alienation of frequent moves, deployments, and reduced support from the government. Our innovative programs are solving specific challenges for military families, including fighting economic insecurity with resources that foster spouse career development, creating family strength with rich family programming, and providing critical peer support for caregivers, whose numbers are only increasing.

With more than 150,000 members in our network, including in chapters and communities all over the world, Blue Star Families touches more than 1.5 million military family members every year. Through our research and program partnerships, Blue Star Families ensures that wherever American military families go, they can always feel connected, supported and empowered to thrive – in every community, across the nation, and around the globe.

Peer support surrounds you with those who can relate to your unique experiences as a veteran. At TAPS, one the ways we connect veterans is through our Military Mentor Program. This unique program is part of our Youth Programs and provides opportunities for veterans (active, retired, or veteran) to serve alongside one another mentoring the surviving children of our military fallen. It is a powerful opportunity to support grieving children while also supporting members of the military who have experienced the loss of battle buddies. It is life-changing and elevating for everyone who participates. To learn more, you can visit https://www.taps.org/militarymentor

Check out Veteran's Club. We have allot of opportunities to connect with other Veterans.

Veteran’s Club was founded in 2017 by U.S. Army Combat Veteran, Jeremy Harrell. Our primary mission is to provide connection, healing, recovery, housing, and employment for the veteran community. We have several programs that allow us to facilitate each of these key initiatives to enhance the lives of our community’s veterans. These include our nationally recognized Equine Assisted Mentoring Program, Family Outreach Program, Homeless Veterans Housing and Recovery Program, and our Community Outreach Programs.
At Veteran’s Club, we believe that working tirelessly on these issues will not only lower the risk of veteran suicide, lower veteran unemployment, and strengthen military families, but will also benefit the community we live in.

Veterans who use health care services in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)'s facilities can have the opportunity to work with peer specialists who work as part of the interdisciplinary teams that provide health care services for Veterans. The peer specialists are Veterans who self-identify with their own lived experiences of recovery from a mental health condition. The peer specialists have been trained to help other Veterans with similar experiences to identify and achieve recovery and personal wellness goals that are individualized and important to the Veterans. Peer specialists serve as relatable role models of recovery and can inspire hope in the Veterans to see their own potential and believe that they too can find success in managing their personal wellness and attain meaningful roles that they choose for their lives. As part of their work, peer specialists share their personal recovery stories. They assist Veterans with personal goal setting and problem solving. They help Veterans identify their strengths, resources, and skills that support their personal goals. Peer specialists use a host of recovery tools to help Veterans learn new coping strategies to improve their self-management over their mental health conditions. They assist Veterans with navigating the VA healthcare system, teach self-advocacy skills and empower Veterans to reconnect with others and find a sense of belonging and purpose both in VA and in their communities. Veterans may request a referral for peer support services from their VA mental health care provider or other VA provider with whom they are working.

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions! I spent two 6 month tours at Knox for training and can appreciate the lure of transitioning off AD and living in the Louisville area. What peer programs do you offer where vets and our families can A) connect with others offline when transitioning into that general area if you don't know anybody yet while B) not making it feel like an awkward networking event.

There are many VSOs in the Louisville region. Here is a link outlining those in the area: https://veterans.ky.gov/Pages/HidPages/VSOs.aspx
It is helpful to connect with a peer group you can identify with and get active.

The Veterans Community Alliance of Louisville is also a great place to connect, find veterans events, and get plugged in. https://www.facebook.com/VCALouisville/

The Clay Hunt Fellows Program opens quarterly and equips the veteran with tools to redefine their purpose and identity out of uniform for a life of continued service. Fellows will complete a paid six-month Base Camp curriculum focused on emotional intelligence through strengths finders discovery, self-awareness exploration and personal assessments, focused cohort discussions, reading, and guided self-reflection assignments. Upon completion, Fellows will be equipped to better lead in their communities and within Team Rubicon.

VA refusing to pay for a non contract facility-two of the contract facilities ended up being unable to meet his care needs and this resulted in two trips to the ER and prolonged hospitalizations. How to ever get ahold of someone to ask for an appt for a specialist outside of the VA due to timely scheduling.
