My older daughter will be enrolling as a freshman in the AROTC program in the U. of Oregon. My second daughter is targeting the Air Force Academy. My son wants to be a Marine. Where did I go wrong? Let me take my tongue out of my cheek: I wholeheartedly view the military as one of a very few careers where one is promoted and offered opportunities based upon performance. I may not agree with the current direction, employment, and utilization of our armed forces. But, these are reasons to get out. There comes a time where the decision, just bluntly, isn't yours to make. Where I may disagree with my kids' decisions (for my own reasons), 100% support is the only hand I'll ever show 'em.

Great question, SGT Vince Albert Dickson

My youngest son is AD USMC LCPL. He decided on his own to enlist. I told him it's a good way to learn about himself and what he wants to do with his life, whether he decides to do 4 yrs or 20. I fully supported him and went to the recruiting office with him to help make sure he got what he wanted.

He's loving it so far and enjoying Okinawa.

If they want to join, then they have my full support. If they don't want to join, well assuming they can be productive citizens elsewhere, then they have my full support.

Knowing what you know now about the military based on your experiences would you let your kids or grandkids join today's military?

It is up to them to decide if they wish to serve. I would support them either way.

Hell yeah! If that's what they want. It was a perfect fit for me. I'm not about forcing me kids into the lies of the college institution anyways, way better options out there. Unless you are going to be a Lier I mean lawyer and a doctor, there really isn't a need for that scam known as a college. Just my opinion.

Yes, I would let my young adults make that decision to join the armed forces, as my parents and grandparents gave me that choice. Now, knowing what I know and how things have transformed in my time; it's debatable.

If my children decided they wanted to serve I would full support and encourage them to pursue it. I have two children who have expressed interest in the military and I am upfront and honest with them about the good and the bad. I let them know it is their decision and if they would like help or advice I would be more than willing to give what I could but ultimately it is their career and as such I wouldn't force my opinion on them.

I sure would and have, but with some guidance. She completed her BSA and went to the Marine Corp OCS, Marines against my Army's better judgement, but I supported her decision and she supported mine, well most of it. (The Marine!!). This post was not to poke at the Marine I have great respect for all branches of services. And I support my childrens decisions to join any branch of their chosen.
