Local San Antonio high school football players under investigation. Should they be charged? Is there any justification for their actions?

Now there is speculation that the referee may have said something to these players and it's the reason why they knocked out the referee.
Even if the referee did say something, does it give the right to these two players to knock him down like this?
What punishment do you feel should be given to these players? Some are saying not to ever let them play the sport again.

Sgt Kelli Mays I saw this the other day, and it definitely looked intentional to me -- there's no way that first kid thought that ref was a player. So yeah. They should be charged, and kicked off the team.

I'm not sure they need to be punished. Is it possible the first guy honestly was going after the play and ran over the ref? The second guy is a little shakier. I saw this and thought ... "That could have been an honest mistake."
That said, if those players are found to have done that to the referee on purpose, I think they should be suspended for at least one full year. At least.
