Three things: pay the damn $1200 for the GI Bill, don't mention your persistent back pain at re-enlistment time, or better yet - join ROTC in college before joining the military and busting ass in the enlisted ranks.

Back in 1991 I was told in boot camp that I had to pay in $1200 in order to use the Montgomery GI Bill. That was $100 a month in beer money, so I said nope.
