Although a good answer, not the one I am looking for, SGT.

Hint: This happened BEFORE 1903... Way before.

The first use of the term “National Guard” by American militia units dates from Lafayette's 1824–1825 tour of the United States. The 2nd Battalion of the 11th New York Artillery – which later became New York’s famed 7th Regiment – was one the units that welcomed Lafayette to New York City, and it adopted the title "National Guard" in honor of Lafayette's service as commander of the Garde Nationale de Paris during the French Revolution. During a review of militia units Lafayette took note of the term, and as it grew in popularity it was adopted by many militia units in the years that followed

Originally called Sergeant Major General through the early 18th century, it was a step below Lieutenant General. The rank at the time had no relation to the modern sergeant major as it was considered a GO rank as they were infantry commanders, 3rd in Command of the Army, or Chiefs of Staff. As armies became more professional, Sergeant Major General became the junior GO rank. By the 18th century the "sergeant" portion was dropped and now we know it by Major General. The US didn't adopt MG until January 1812.

Lets see if I can earn the rest of the point. The Raiders spent many months practicing short take offs and landings at sea off of the USS Hornet. The speed of the carrier pushing forward into the wind gave an additional speed of 45 MPH meaning that the aircraft only needed to pick up another 23 miles per hour to provide lift enough to get them off of the deck safely. The airframe they used was the B25 bomber which was a sturdily built mid size bomber.

OK CPL, I'll give you a pass.

An initial proof-of-concept test was conducted off Norfolk, VA.  The bombers practiced at the airfield with the outline of a carrier painted on the runway.  They never practiced off an actual carrier.  Once the planes were loaded at Alameda, they took off once, for the mission.  (Sidenote:  Today, the latest Hornet (CV-12) is moored as a floating museum in Alameda.)

The launch was advanced a day due to being spotted by a Japanese vessel.  The weather was windy and rainy that day with 30ft waves.  But it benefitted the launch as the winds were eastward at more than 40kn, and the ship was cruising westward at 24 knots. (Her top speed was 33 knots)

They never practiced landings because they knew they couldn't land back on the carrier. The mission was to bomb Tokyo and land in China. They put the added fuel cans in at the last minute because a Japanese fishing vessel spotted them and they had to launch further out to sea.

The history behind Tacking on the Crow is when a sailor makes Petty Officer 3rd Class their supervisor would either stencil or sew on their first crow and chevron.

In the Civil War, the first real battle between the two armies was First Mannassas/Bull Run.  The Civil War ended at Appomatox Court house.

One Gentleman lived at Manassas during the first battle of Bull Run.  He later moved to Appomatox Court house, and the surrender of the General Lee's Army took place at his house.  He quipped that the War started in his front yard and ended in his front parlor.

Who was this man?
