Ah yes, we've all seen them; "so, there you were" in a theater or a room full of service members or veterans, one minute everything's ok, then all of a sudden there it is... the over-the-top military movie discrepancy! So, what was that moment that stands out most in your mind? What are those associated memories or stories that come to mind? Did the base theater erupt into 'chaos' over an unkempt/incorrect uniform, improper language/jargon/ customs, or was there something that was just plain 'unsat' from a military point-of-view. lol Well, there's a ton of them out there, and I'm pretty sure that something should immediately come to mind, so what are we waiting for? Quick, pull up a keyboard, and let's get this thing started; thanks for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

Iron Eagle II....the guy says something about "is this where you punch in the vectors?" in a M113, toggles the commo switch from internal to external and guns fire from the cupola....completely ridiculous.

Yes! Iron Eagle II, this movie is the military movie buff's discrepancy dream! lol Good catch, how you caught this particular discrepancy without being distracted by any one of the thousands of other glaring inaccuracies, misrepresentations, and inconsistencies going-on-at-the-same-time is simply amazing! lol

Like how F-4's filled in for MIGS. Now that was a very glaring mistake if ever. What Mig is close to being similar to an F-4?

In fact, all the Iron Eagle movies had glaring mistakes in them. And we all tend to miss them because of something else we catch like the acting being bad because of something they say.

This was the biggest errors of the Iron Eagle series. How about a 15 year old who teaches himself how to fly combat missions, steals a plane, and flies a rescue mission into Iraq...not as bad as Basic but still pretty up there.

Those whole movies were a bit out there. The F-4's were used in the sequel. The entire thing was shot using Israeli Air Craft. The Kfir is probably thing remotely close to an enemy weapon system since it is a Mirage 5 redux. But the F4's being Mig 29s? They could have used F-15's and called them Foxbats, at least an F15 looks like a Mig 25 somewhat with the intake strakes.

The whole premise a kid is going to steal an F-16 with a full colonel as his wing man and they don't go to prison. Then in IE 2 the Colonel is a mechanic in an air museum. Yeah too many dramatic licenses taken in that movie.

In the movie the "The Guardian", 2006, COSTNER flies a mission after retiring, CO of the AitSta, jumps in the Helo to fly the mission even though he is not flight qualified.
Two things that will never happen, if you aren't up to quals and Flight Surgeon cleared, you don't fly, and once you are retired, you are out of active service.

Another huge discrepancy was the free fall deployment of the rescue swimmers....AT NIGHT...they are not allowed as per the current flight syllabus.

CPO C, excellent observation, and sure enough, there it is in 'COMDTINST M3710.4C, Ch. 2, Para. B. Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Deployments and Recovery Procedures. Item 1. Free Fall Deployment Procedures.' listed in all caps, red, and bolded text "WARING: FREE FALL DEPLOYMENT IS USED ONLY IN DAYLIGHT. WHEN CONDUCTING A FREE FALL DEPLOYMENT, A MINIMUM WATER DEPTH OF 12 FEET IS REQUIRED." So, there it is in black-and-white, so disappointing that Kevin Costner obviously isn't studying or staying up-to-date on his regs! lol

But I've seen MANY instances where Coasties do what is necessary and "right" and ignore the hell out of regulations and orders. Hurricane Katrina was a good example - hot refueling of helos and pilots only taking breaks long enough to pee and grab a sandwich... flying upwards of 16-hours at a time. That's why Admiral Allen had to go down there, before someone got burned out and did something stupid.

or MORE stupid.

If I remember correctly though, he hadn't retired when he went on that mission. He was reassigned to Alaska, and Ashton Kutcher showed up to his first duty station to find that he would be working for him. I think maybe he was going to retire, but he pulled this one last mission?

I don't have any specific examples, but what always makes me get that CSM twitch is 1. Salutes 2. Popped collars with ACUs and 3. Wearing the PC like a baseball cap. Bonus points if a movie has all 3.

My wife always turns to me after an actor salutes and asks, "Did he do it correctly?"

Rarely, very rarely (even allowing for the fact that the salute has evolved)

I love this category!!!  Okay, where to begin?  How about..."Behind Enemy Lines":  Beginning of the movie on the flight deck.  They kept switching from the F-18 Legacy Hornet, to the F-18 Super Hornet on the SAME CAT...

There are a lot more..but I would be here all day

Probably the MQ-9s flying via jet propulsion with multiple missiles and miniguns onboard flying all over Germany.  That was in the A-Team film that came out recently... and it was baaaaaaaaad.

That's true :) It's just the one that came to mind. Didn't they also slow the descent of a tank or something by firing at the ground? That worked in GTAIII.

They altered the descent of the tank by firing the main gun so that they could fall into the lake instead of the ground. I suppose the recoil would be enough to make it change direction? I'm curious if that would even be possible. Maybe we could get some tankers to try to recreate that scene.

The movie " Navy Seals " with ‎Charlie Sheen , when they use a Stinger Air Defense Missile on a truck with two machine guns mounted on it that were chasing it . I was ADA , Chaparral Missile Crewman back in the late 80's and we had Stingers assigned to us also . Nope , wouldn't work .

'Full Metal Jacket' Had a great first 20 min. but I was disappointed to see the 'Stars and Stripes' team salute a LT and a Col. as they arrived in Hue. Not healthy for officers.
Found it disturbing to watch Tom Cruise (Lt) behave disrespectfully toward Demi Moore (LtCmdr) in 'A Few Good Men'.
The TV series 'The Code" was a joke from start to finish.
The harbor shot of Pearl Harbor in the Affleck film seemed to show the raked bows of modern destroyers as opposed to what they looked like in 1941.

The uniform thing I hear quite a bit. I learned while doing some advisor work on a film that there is an old Cold War federal law that prohibits the proper wear of the uniform in movies and television as to not provide accurate information regarding it’s appearance to enemy states.

Going back to John Wayne and "The Green Berets"...at the end of the movie the Duke is standing with a young boy looking out over the ocean at what is supposed to represent a sunset...problem is that at Danang (supposed location) when one looks out toward the ocean one is looking eastward..hard to have the sun set in the east unless we turn everything upside down.
