For Air Force movies we lack in this department unfortunately. The most realistic Air Force movie for its time would have been Strategic Air Command staring BG(RET) Jimmy Stewart. The movie was a propaganda flick for our SAC bomber crews during the start of the Cold War. The premise was a bunch of former WWII B-29 Air Crew were recalled back to active duty to fly the new B-36 Peacemaker and later the B-47 Stratojet. I thought they got the Air Crew mentality right and showed the less glamorous side of being in the military. All the crews had just started lives after WWII to be abruptly recalled to AD.
Not a real shoot stuff blow things up thriller piece. It is known to be the some of best surviving areal footage of planes that are long gone from the inventory. There are only a couple museums that even have B-36 on display which was a neat plane for its time. Ran with 6 Large Radial Piston Engine's and 4 Jets for assistance during takeoff. It was the last major combat bomber to be piston driven as its primary power plants.

Lt Col (Join to see), I'm surprised you didn't mention "Twelve O'clock High" (the 1949 movie, not to be confused with the "12 O'clock High" television series) or "Memphis Belle".

You to be read into a special access program to know all the details to our Still in High school, steel an F-16 program. That's a prerequisite to get in the Academy, you know you have to convince a fullbird Col to let you steel an F-16 and fly it across the ocean and do a mission. We can thank the Israeli Air Force film office for that one. LOL!

I spaced out those two. They were good. Ironically we watched 12 O' Clock high as part of a leadership curriculum in AFROTC. I guess I could add Bat 21, that one seemed somewhat legit.
Since then the Air Force has had movies like:
Iron Eagle
Broken Arrow
Eagle Eye
Air Force 1
Drones
I am sure I am missing a couple other gems.
On this subject.
I tech advised on an RPA movie that will be out in 2015. Other than the fact that I made sure they had correct uniforms for and some of the behavior of the crews. The overall premise will be fiction other than the fact that we do fly UAV's in the middle east flown from a small base north of Las Vegas. The set design has an authentic look to it.

It was a great movie, but it took me watching it a 2nd and 3rd time to see the whole thing. There must have been something wrong with the projector in the theater because it kept getting blurry.
In all seriousness, even with some Hollywood spin, it was a great movie and pretty hard to sit through. I think some of the dialog once the shit storm hits is the absolute best. You could tell that when it all hit, these guys could care less about who they were fighting, why they were there, and it was all about each other.

I read the book before watching the movie. There were a couple of discrepancies between them but overall it was a great movie.

I retired in '97, so I missed all the second round in the Gulf and Afghanistan and know little about compound defense, but 13 Hours seems pretty true to what I read about that action.

Platoon when Charlie Sheen was holding the towel over his head with ants on his neck. F***in ants, ticks, chiggers and mosquitos.
Good training and there is no such thing as bad weather! "I shit you not."

Its not a movie but Band of Brothers is very good. goes a long way to show army life with real events during World War II. I do believe the Movie "We Were Soldiers" does a good job as well. Warning Mel Gibson plays in that movie.

if you can count band of brothers the mini series... its probably one of the closer to realistic options there is...
