Profpledge copy
I have said it all along but this is just part of a populace that is growing and that is anti-USA. I think it is time for us to put a reality hat and stop with the partisan shenanigans of a small portion of this society. Here below is the utter non-sense:

"If you sign up for Denver college professor Charles Angeletti's American Civilization class, be forewarned that you're going to have to recite his invective-filled 'New Pledge' -- and according to some of his students, also be ready to swallow a big helping of his politics.

Angeletti, who teaches at Metropolitan State University of Denver, has students learn an anti-American spoof of the Pledge of Allegiance that denounces the U.S. as a Republican-controlled bastion of injustice, all while spewing his own far-left brand of politics, according to current and former students.

“I pledge allegiance to and wrap myself in the flag of the United States Against Anything Un-American,” reads Angeletti's version. “And to the Republicans for which it stands, two nations, under Jesus, rich against poor, with curtailed liberty and justice for all except blacks, homosexuals, women who want abortions, Communists, welfare queens, treehuggers, feminazis, illegal immigrants, children of illegal immigrants, and you, if you don't watch your step.”

“We’re very racist, we’re very repressive, we’re very Christian oriented, we don’t tolerate other kinds of thinking in this country.”
- Charles Angeletti, professor at Metropolitan State University

Hell - he makes some odd points in his methods, BUT if he makes people THINK about the true meaning of the pledge and the responsibilities that go with that pledge I'm all for it.

IF, and that is a big IF, that is the case, then yeah, I can see that. One thing that younger students today don't know how to do is to think critically. Challenging them to do so is the only way to make them get better at it.

The first thing I noticed was that this was really just a Fox news article about a news article written by campus reform. So we are talking about a right wing news report about a right wing article in a right wing college journal reporting on one students claim. Now I can understand why a professor of American history might think such a pledge was a useful tool to provoke discussion and debate, however I think it’s unlikely that any would require his students to say it… especially since the whole thing is intended to be sarcastic. Most Americans know and understand that our constitution was ground breaking and helped change the world. Most know how we defeated some of the greatest evils (Nazi Germany and Totalitarian Communism) the world has ever seen. However few Americans know that Hitler studied how we handled American Indians as he was preparing a final solution for European Jews. Few Americans really understand the relationship between capital and privilege in our nation. I would think that a good American Civilization class would focus on the things people didn’t know and understand.

SSG (Join to see) You responded "It's unlikely the Priest understands his role as servant, his connection to the people he's serving or the teachings of his religion." which is quite correct.

It is also quite correct that that "Priest" is highly likely to be acting in accordance with the management directives of the senior management for whichever branch of "God Inc." they are currently conducting retail sales operations on behalf of.

PO3 (Verify To See) You say "In other words... "Knowing god means you just say you know it and as long as you believe hard enough it's true".".

That isn't quite correct. It is much more correct to say "Once you 'know God' you no longer have to 'believe' that you "know God" because you 'know God'.".

You also say "Because we have no evidence for our claims of existence, we'll say you simply have to 'experience it' otherwise you have no way of knowing." which is getting very close to the mark. After all "Being is being." - right?

Then you say "We only know apples have apple trees because we've seen and studied apple trees before - your analogy doesn't hold up." which would be quite appropriate IF there had been an analogy - which there wasn't.

Then you say "If a being or object has any bearing on the universe, that means that this entity's existence is capable of empirical measurement." - by which I can but conclude that nuclear radiation had no bearing on the universe prior to the invention of machines capable of detecting and measuring it. I also cannot but conclude that nuclear binding energy has no bearing on the universe as it cannot be empirically measured.

PO3 Damien De Franco If someone exhibits certain traits and qualities, it looks like a duck, it walks like a duck, it sounds like a duck... I don't need to conduct DNA testing, for all practical intents and purposes it's a duck. If someone seems to have overcome ego, is not caught up in the hopes and fears of everyday life, and exhibits a genuine love for all their fellow man... they are for all practical intents and purposes, what I would call an enlightened person. In Christianity there is what is known as fruits of the spirit... the way to tell that the "holy ghost" is in a person is by observing the fruits of the spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control. There seems to be similar criteria in almost all religious systems. These "fruits of the spirit" can be observed, we may disagree about the cause... however the effect these religious experiences have on people is easily detectable.

Religion can provide context, however I don't believe any religion is required for it.
