Muscle Shirts made from PT Shirts, why do we see them?

So I was on Instagram, searching pictures and I looked for the #ArmyStrong, for my surprise I found a lot of pictures of Soldiers using their PT Shirts as muscles shirts. I commented in a few asking if we were allowed, my comments were erased. They were SM, I saw pictures of them with their ACU's, out of all the shirts that you could cut and make a Muscle shirt, why would you use your PT's?

I look at it like this, as long as they aren't trying to wear it IN uniform, it is ok...I don't have to like it, but it is ok. Another example, how many folks do you see wearing ACU/DCU/BDU/ABU/OCP/etc pants for mowing the lawn, cut off in to shorts, hiking gear, etc.

TSgt Joshua Copeland I do like muscle shirts, actually I use them, just not out of a PT shirt. I've seen just like 2 people using ACU's pants for mechanics is not something I see often.

Actually wearing ACU is for work around the house is not authorized since it's a uniform still in service. BDU and DCU is aokay since they have a wear out date and are no longer a "uniform".
On the other hand, like you said MSgt if they do it at home and not at morning formation who cares, ACU pants once unserviceable area still good for work around the house, car etc.

SGT (Join to see) then, the PTs wear-out date is until Sept 2017, they shouldn't be authorized to use them since they are still in service as well. Am I wrong?

Like I said it isn't really that clear cut and dry, you are supposed to maintain a certain number of PT uniform's. So if you have that set number of serviceable uniforms it doesnt really matter what you do with the rest.
But like it SSG Danual Hays and MSgt Joshua Copeland said before as long as you don't wear it "in formation" or run around on post wearing it you should be fine.

I do not see nothing wrong with it if they're unserviceble and they have replace them with new ones. Also we are transitioning to the new pt uniform so they might have retire their old ones, like me.

I know that APFU is still in service but once it is torn, rip, faded or too stain technically speaking you can't use it as part of the APFU. However, by reg you can use it as civilian attire. I know it does not make no sense but half of the rules in the Army don't make any sense.
Note: Just use personal discretion when during stuff like this. On Instagram it's okay to do this, some people are just proud of the Army "SWAG" or service and want to show it in their unique way. I wouldn't do it, but that's me.

1SG (Join to see) I'm the kind of person if I have to think twice something, or even if it pass through my mind it could be wrong, I rather don't. There's always a $5 and below near post to get cheap shirts and make them muscle shirts.

I just recently made a pair of ACU pants into shorts due to them being un-serviceable due to me having to get them cut so i could them over a cast..won't be wearing it on-post or anything concerning official business.

Fair comment! What you wear around the house is one thing, but in formation you keep your act clean! Why is this important? I can think of a few right off the cuff: 1) We should always aim to do the right thing, and therefore we do not modify our uniforms, 2) We should not act our rank but the next rank up, if a promotion is what you are after.....act the rank you want to be, and 3) loose regulation enforcement is like the flu, it spreads quickly. If you are not careful everyone will be doing mods to their PT uniform. We are all different, but we are also all the same. Unity!!!!!

SSG (Join to see) this face would be nothing without the attitude, hehehe
MSgt Steve Miller #2, I'm trying to be 2 ranks up, I'm too old to be just one up.

I'm pretty sure it's not authorized but since you pay for them and they are your property... it's just one of those things you can argue about all day long without really getting a conclusion

I was issued 5 of them, I didn't "pay" for them so I looked at it as an alteration to the uniform. SGT (Join to see)

When you look at your Clothing record, everything that says Y under the ETS column you keep, meaning in goes over into your proberty and you get your clothing allowance to replace pieces that are no longer serviceable. So it's a catch 22, you have to maintain them since they are part of your gear that you are accountable for but they are technically speaking yours. You don't have to give them back so someone else can be issued them.

I have no problems with that as long as it is done outside of the installation. What bothers me is seeing soldiers wearing IPFU items on on post mixed with civilian clothes. When I am on leave I often wear my short sleeve shirts to the gyms, beach, lake etc...

I've got to say for those of us no longer in; whether their is still a wear out date or not, on for instance my ACU's, I wear them in the garage, out bird hunting and other activities. I will never be caught wearing them to Walmart or downtown stores, I maybe retired but do not want to end up on the People of Walmart EVEEEERRRRR

I really don't know. I am a bit lost on this one. I have seen old Vets do this but that makes sense. I don't understand why a random person would do that.

Neither AR or DA PAM 670-1 says something about it. It says that it can't be altered to be tighter but beside that, nothing. Once I get my new PTs, I might do one or two, for off post training like your beloved Crossfit, hehehe CPT (Join to see)

I have been know to wear some shorts with a tab on it but a shirt is a bit much. I don't even like wearing the shirt for PT. No way I would wear by choice at home.

CPT (Join to see) I got to BCT a lil bit bigger than now, they gave me XL, my wife use them for sleep because I can't use them. They are just too uncomfortable to workout with. I got the tab thing kind of late, I remember that discussion! hahaha

No violations made AND it acts as free marketing/recruiting for the Army. Let the pride run free as long as there's no disrespect and they wear proper uniforms in formation and on post.

SGT Marvin "Dave" Bigham I'll work a little bit more on my muscles before doing this.

Cut off jeans originated with how do you extend the life of a pair of jeans that you probably spent a lot of money on, after you get significant holes in the knees. I'm thinking that at least some of these came about because of rips or tears that made them unsuitable to regular wear in uniform anyway.
