I went to talk to my recruiter and he steered me away from a combat MOS to go to a 15 series. This is because I want to fly later on, but I really want to be in the action and not be repairing kinda seems boring. What are your guys thoughts?

Do what you want to do, just realize that it isn't Hollywood. I am an 11C and I just put my warrant packet in a few weeks ago. Having some familiarization with the helicopters as a mechanic should help you as a pilot, but I don't think it will have so much of an impact on getting selected. Having good recommendations and getting an education (associates at least, preferably bachelor's) will give you a much better shot at getting picked up.

Aviation is one of the most, if not the most heavily deployed assets in the Army. Especially Chinooks, Attack, and MEDEVAC. Those deployment rotations generally begin the day after their dwell time ends.

I've been in the military for 12 years. I've been a Cav Scout, Military Police, and now, aviation. Aviation has been, by far, the most exciting, pucker inducing thing that I've done in the military.

Go 15T or 15U, get through school, then work your butt off to get into a flight company. Flight companies are the best place in the Army to be.

If combat you want is better to stay 11b, later down the road you still can apply for warrant officer and do the flight school at fort rucker.

My recruiter 40 years ago talked me into going into 15 series I was a crew chief on hueys. I am so glad he talked me into it. I got out went to Parks College of Aviation got my Airframe & Powerplant license. I immediately got a job in St. Louis with then McDonnell Douglas. I just stayed in the reserves did over 20 years with the reserves and this past June I have been with now Boeing for 36 years.

Don't let a recruiter tell you what job he wants you to do. It's your future. I know plenty of guys that went infantry and that are now warrants flying. You make your own decision and if he continues to screw you around go to another recruiter.

No matter what MOS you choose, you'll have your fair share of boredom. Infantry is not immune to that, but like every MOS, it has its merits and will help you grow.

My advice, take an MOS that fits your intelligence and your interests and you'll always find something to do... if you pick something that isn't well-aligned you may just end up hating it.

Be careful for what you wish for. You want action, all I can say is I hope you are up for it. I have seen the greatest wish they were not there. I have seen the meekest kick more butt than allowed.

I can understand your enthusiam, but to be honest and fair, I think you need to sit down and re-evaluate your priorities. What do you mean by action? Are you lured by the glamour and excitement in Hollywood films, video games, and the so called persona we've built up in the media? Being a solider is at best boring most of the time followed by periods where you're going full throttle. I won't repeat the comments below, but what do you truly expect? Hell isn't that cool when you get right down to it. Then again, its a lesson we all learn in time :-)

50 years ago, I went from 11B2P as a door gunner to 67U2P on an OJT basis in Viet Nam, we were all part of a crew on a Chinook, all our original door gunners later became crew chiefs and flight engineers as our tour went on. (Those that survived the first few months in country ) I never regretted moving up the ladder. If I had not been shot at the end of my tour, I would have reupped in aviation, with flight school in mind. Even if you don't stay in, you have a good start on a civilian career in aviation. My recommendation, follow that recruiters advice.
