Guard bonus recoupment or loss is pro-rated, based on when the Soldier is no longer eligible, whether it is changing MOS, units, status or branch.
A couple examples:
1. if your son reenlists for 6 years, receives the entire bonus up front, and after 3 years goes active duty, 3 years of that bonus would be recouped.
2. if your son reenlists for 6 years, only receives half the bonus up front with the other half due at the 3 year mark, but goes active duty at 3 years, he is just no longer eligible for the second payment.
