NBA commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling from all NBA activities for life, fined him $2.5 million. Is this enough?

He's going to be laughing all the way to the bank. He paid 12 million for the team. It's worth $500 million and I'm sure it will sell for twice that.
Banned for life? Who knows how many months that could be! LOL

Not to worry, he's going to have to leave the country. He's not going to be able to go anywhere in the US without people sharing their "thoughts" with him!

I think punishing someone to that extent over a private conversation is ludacris. I can see the fine, if he violated some kind of behavior clause in the NBA contract but pretty much forcing him to sell HIS stake in the team seems somewhat un-American to me.

SFC,
I dont think the persons history should be cause for a certain punishment. There was no trial for him to defend his character or for others to defermate him. So his past shouldnt have played a factor in this decision. For this singular, probably unlawful, event the punishment was far to extreme in my opinion.

Also, from the recording clips i heard there was no racial slur used. From what i gather the "black man" he refers to is magic johnson. he just didnt want his mistress to be seen with him at the clippers events.

Its not a good look still, plus most, well all of his STAR employees are of African American decent. I wouldn't work for a CDR that had such feelings either. There is a level of professionalism to be maintained in any professional organization.

True however, these are his private feelings. If he truly was a racist as everyone is making out im sure all the black players would be payed less or ostracized in some other way. That would be like me looking at a SGM's mason ring and automatically thinking that i shouldnt trust him because i read too much and think theyre cultist or something.

I'll tell you like this, I agree with Mark Cuban.
The reality is you can't force a private American to sell off his property.
People spend too much time in other people's business. It's called capitalism. If the people agree enough, they will force him out without offending his constitutional rights.

Not quite enough - YET. If the other Team Owners vote 75% or better to oust Donald Sterling, the current L.A. Clippers owner . . . then that will definitely settle things.
The guy has earned the majority of his 1.9 billion dollar worth from properties owned in CA and Las Vegas, but I'm sure he is enjoying the recent success of the Clippers. Furthermore, he was dating a minority female (half Black, half Mexican) . . . although he is married. Dude is a hypocrite. Sorry a$$. Regardless of the team, his money, or anything else, I hope the guy makes amends with God. He is already 80 years old and before too long, he will see if he is banned from the Gates of Heaven.

Not much else could be done. Additionally the commissioner is encouraging that the board of governers force the sale of the team.

He can only sue. The owners will vote him out and sell the team to someone else. If the NBA cares about profits then they will act quick, the clippers will start to lose value in the offseason when Paul, Griffin, and Jordan request to be traded and Doc Rivers quits.

The Commissioner maxed out that was available through the commission. I'm pretty confident the votes will be there among the owners to force the sale. The REALLY BAD part is that the POS bought the team in 1980 or 81 for approximately 50 million. I would expect the sale to bring close to the 1 Billion mark and he will reap the profit.

I just heard on the news about an hour ago that the NAACP has canceled Sterlings award.

To think this all came from a fight he had with his girlfriend over a picture shared on Instagram! I think what the commissioner did was in the best interest of the NBA, it's players and other teams. While not a huge basketball fan myself, I see why he wanted to act quickly and why he thought this was the best course of action. Keep in mind, according to reports, Don Sterling has never expressed sorrow for his comments. And while yes, I'll admit I've said things in the middle of a fight with my ex, after I calmed down and all, I came to my sense and realized what I said was wrong. I'm thinking we'll see Magic Johnson owning the Clippers here in the next few days.

Just a start. He will probably be forced to sell his team after the vote from other owners.

I don't think owning the clippers would tarnish Magic Johnson. Michael Jordan owns the Charlotte Bobcats after all. If Magic tried out for baseball, that would be different.

For using the N word? You'd have to ban and fine most of the athletes as well.. Not to mention just about every rapper on the planet..

It had nothing to do with dropping the N-bomb - and he didn't even come close (from what I read and heard). He was expressing his extreme displeasure over having "black people" at his games because he didn't wan them there.

Yes this is a one-sided deal here and it is disgraceful. Jay-Z is an NBA team share holder and is openly racist (just one example). Less to say that if we put tape recorders in locker rooms and personal space of others we wouldn't find out that the NBA is full of racists. SGT Luna good on you for pointing out that nothing gets said when players advocate for a return of segregation to professional sports. What a shame that his behavior, while I do not condone it, seems to only be such a huge target because he is the the minority in the NBA. What type of precedent does this set anyway. I would bet there is no one that would read this, or anywhere for that matter, who hasn't said something prejudicial or similar in the "privacy" of their home/space. Hell it is taught in Army Equal Opportunity that all humans are prejudiced, it's in our nature. So everyone should just lash out and crush anyone who is recorded doing so? To say nothing of those who participating in the mob and are themselves outspokenly racist? Wow. SSG Hasbun you identified part of the problem right there by singling out an entire demographic of pure hypocrites.

Jay Z is not a team share holder. He sold his share. He didnt even own 1% of the Nets. They just used him to sell some tickets and make the team popluar.
I would like to see what major sports player came out and said there should be a 100 percent black league. Becaue that player would never play in the league again.
Donald Sterling is a known bigot. Look him up, he has been sued at least twice for discrimination.
Now have people said things they shouldnt say in private? Yes.
But he was THAT GUY that was recorded and made public, so thats on him. But im glad he got the punishment he got. If I was a player i wouldnt even play for the team if he wasnt banned for life and forced to sell the team.
The owners will vote him out if they want the NBA and their teams to stay profitable. Clippers already lost ALL of their sponsors if Silver didnt come down hard the NBA wouldve lost because it wouldve been a league wide boycott by the players.
You cant say you dont want any black people at YOUR games and not expect nothing to happen. Thats why at least i have a little respect for the KKK members. They let you know up front how they feel and not some freaking closet bigot.

Despite anachronistic opinions, his employment practices are well within the legal and ethical guidelines. He holds some personal opinions about the value of blacks and, probably, other non-whites, but goes to work every day and treats every one of them with the due respect.
I would say this man is doing exactly what we expect. He holds opinions that we don't agree with, but sees beyond his opinions to the value that every person provides to their employer and society.
The disturbing thing is the continue one-up-manship of every organization to see who can apply the greatest amount of politically correct torture when someone speaks in a way that is not "acceptable."
As previously stated, when it comes down to it, he will laugh all the way to the bank. Basketball is not his only investment.
Take it for what you will...
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me.
