In my experience as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, upward movement seems to stall out after a while. I feel that most of us that have made it to this level have served in some capacity as a Drill Sergeant, Recruiter or Instructor. I believe that Officers have an advantage in the fact that there are staff positions at every level as they advance. Most recently, My CSM brought up the topic of nominative and broadening assignments that are available to Senior NCO's. Has anyone served in one of these positions and how did you go about getting that assignment?

MSG Dowell, thank you for the link. After viewing your page, how would I fit into that formation as an Soldier with aviation specific background?

Thank you for the response MSG Dowell. I viewed the AWG website and I'm interested to know what, if any, job opportunities would AWG have for someone with an aviation background?

We have had Soldiers with an aviation background apply, be invited to the assessment course, and were subsequently selected. It all starts with the application. Operational Advisor positions are MOS immaterial. Tactical experience is a consideration, but it isn't the only attribute measured.

Good point, never served on a nominative staff postion, but did do Drill Sergeant. I guess its about the right time and place. Its all who you know, not what you know, in my opinion.

I urge all NCO's to seek these assignments out! No one is going to tell you about these!! I worked at a MEPS and Recruiting, which provided much broadening and insight to what the Army's mission really is about!

I’m currently serving in a nominative assignment at DEOMI. You can either contact your back manager to inquire about a nominative assignment or you can actual contact the nominative branch and get more information from them. I am enjoying my assignment because it’s a joint assignment so I get to work with all branches of the military. Good luck to you and I hope they can offer you something that you find fulfilling.

My previous assignment was working in the Defense Attache Office in Helsinki, Finland. It's a nominative position, and something that I found to be not only eye-opening, but a fantastic experience all around. It's also a position that is MOS-immaterial, unlike some other assignments. Another one that comes up, but doesn't receive a lot of publicity, is being an enlisted aide to a general officer. It's also supposed to be MOS-immaterial, and depending on who you end up working with, could definitely help you write your own ticket when you PCS.
