I will be heading there in October. I was looking for expectations of the Base and surrounding areas. Also, if possible, advice on being a communications NCO in an all Signal unit and transitioning to a more combat focused unit.

Hey Sgt Blake -- we (JBLM) are definately not as warm as San Antone, but it is not as brown either!!! Are summers are great (it's rained maybe 5 days since June), not too hot in the day, and cools off nicely at night.

There is good and bad about all the surrounding towns.. I live in Olympia, which is a little smaller and less hectic than Tacoma, but we still have a Mall and lots of good eats. I know quite a bit about the real-estate market, so if you have any home questions, just ask!

TSgt,
I need to come to the realization that the climate will definitely be polar opposites. There won't be anymore shorts & t-shirts in October. I won't be looking to buy a home yet. But, when the time comes, I will keep you in mind.

Expect to get wet A LOT, expect it to rain A LOT, get used to yuppies and pot smoking hippie tree hugging liberals.
As with an base there are good and bad areas, so watch out for Lakewood. Traffic on the 5 will drive ya nuts.

SFC,
I appreciate the help. I guess I will need to obtain a collection of jackets/coats for the very near future. I've heard about Lakewood, and what you said has been the norm for that area. Traffic in the area here in San Antonio is horrible as well, so I see the frustration will continue there as well.

But Lakewood is famous. I see it on COPS every day.

SFC,

Well, i haven't really settled in with a unit yet. I've been passed around to my 3rd assignement now in 2 months. Apparently, there aren't any spots on Fort Lewis for a non-Airborne 25C (Radio Operator-Maintainer). So, I'm currently on a 6-month detail at the PEB Clinic until my leadership can figure out where they can place me. Also, the Battalion I was detailed from is being deactivated a few months after I return from ALC next March. Hopefully, I can get a solid assignment soon.
