I'm at my 2 year mark in Germany, and I recently called my branch manager. I was super excited to be given the choices of Knox and Wainwright (can you feel the sarcasm?). I'm not really interested in that part of Alaska, so does anyone have any info on Knox and the surrounding areas? I spent a month there in '07 for WLC, so I don't know much of anything. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

SSG,
Fort Knox really has a lot to offer. Much more than what you know! You have the option of living on post but the surrounding areas are growing and there are plenty of nice homes to choose from.

Louisville is about 25 mi north of Knox and they have some of the best restaurants around! There is a lot of culture in the surrounding areas and lots of things to do.

If you have a choice and you want to live on post choose 'Anderson Greens'. It is single family and much larger than the rest of the housing...a lot of us are in duplexes in Maple Ridge and Oak Park. Not bad but not as large either.

Knox is not bad, if you like outdoors type activities it is great (I fish a lot). As everyone has already said it is centrally located so you can get to the major cities within hours.

As with any PCS, it's what you make of it. I was a part of Emergency services operations and worked for garrison command. As for me and my family we had a blast there! We went to the KY Derby, the bourbon trail etc... It's no longer a tradoc installation and more of a ghost town until the cadets come in during the summer. Its pretty much the home of the Army since HRC is there and USAREC. The surrounding areas are awesome. Elizabethtown is growing, Rineyville is great place to live in as well as vine grove. Also if you choose to stay on post you'll get a place almost immediately. Housing there is only at 30% and they have opened it up to civilians since there isn't very many Soldiers there anymore. It's a great place and you'll love it.

I worked in DES operations and worked hand in hand with DPTMS and G3. Basically I let G3 know our capabilities and what we could or couldn't do during our G3 sync meetings and then provided tasking info to the patrols. Most taskings were support for installation runs, installation AT exercises, active shooter exercises, concerts, drug take back and misc minor things. It was busy even with 3/1 gone but still a great place. I bought a house there and plan to go back one of these days and hopefully retire there.

You'll more then likely end up at the 34th MP detachment unless you have a special skill I.E. Physical security, MPI etc...

Sounds like what I've been doing the last 8 years or so. I'm looking to ETS, so this may not be a bad gig. I'm Traffic qualified .

So you'll definitely be doing what you do now. It's crazy how the MP world works! 34th MP Det actually belongs to Cadet Command because obviously we need to fall under the Installation Senior Commander to enforce General Orders and Laws etc... But, we are OPCON to Garrison and work directly for the Garrison Commander because DES is a Garrison asset. Kinda sucks because we get thinned out doing details for the Post CSM and also doing the Road mission handed down by Garrison but one benefit of being in Cadet Command is numerous school opportunities. Cadet Command is is TRADOC and with TRADOC comes a lot of money for certifications etc... You'll get a lot of school opportnites like MRT, MFT, SHARP and any MP School especially SRT!

I was there with 3BCT, 1ID before we got inactivated. I loved it. Just depends on what your into. Elizabethtown is nice, Radcliff isn't to bad and Louisville is just a stone throw away. I haven't been there for a couple years but like I said when I was there I loved it. 4th street in Louisville brings in bands and musical artists in the summer, there's plenty of clubs and bars on 4th street and bardstown road if you like to go out with friends, the Kentucky derby is a blast, it's all what you make it. Unit wise I can't give you any info though

I am currently here now at Knox. I would ask SFC Hoyt our branch manager what unit you will be with. Inbox me and I will tell you what I know as of today.

SFC Smith, I'm an MP, so I'd probably go to the detachment or the DES. I haven't officially accepted the assignment yet.

Knox is far from your Ft. Hood kinda place. So if your lookin for a place to party, Knox is not it! Knox is defiantly a place to go if you like different atmospheres due to its central location. Personally I liked it.

Ft Knox is about 45 miles south of Louisville and 15 miles north of Elizabethtown. Those two areas are the closest cities to the base, as Radcliff (outside the gate) doesn't offer much at all. As for activity, the community is rather quiet with occasional activities. You are centrally located in the Mid-Eastern portion of the country and can access other major cities via car. Nashville, TN is 2.5 hours south, Indianapolis is 2.5 hours north, Cincinnati is 2 hours northeast, St Louis 4 hours west, Chicago 5.5 hours north, and Detroit is 6 hours north. So as you can see, if you get bored you can get in your car and drive. The base itself has decent facilities and amenities, and housing is new and plentiful. I hope this information is helpful.

Hello, This is SSG Holmes and I`m stationed at Ft. Knox, its cold during the winter, ok during the summer, Radcliff is the town outside the gates, Elizabethtown is the better of the two, housing is brand new, Post is pretty much a ghost town except during the summer we have cadets here training and everything is geared towards them, schools are good on post, not so good on the outside, lot to see in Kentucky.

I spent the last 12 years there! It's quiet, beutiful, cheap, and centered to everywhere. I love it there but job situation made me have to move to Ft. Carson.

My wife and I recently started PCS Realty here in the Louisville/Ft. Knox area and could help answer any of your questions concerning the area. I am actually from Louisville and understand your concerns about the area but I can assure you this is a great place to live. Feel free to give us a call at [login to see] .
