Fort Drum, as you know, is in Upstate NY. The base isn't very big, but it's close to Watertown. Be prepared for very long cold winters....due to being located at the east end of Lake Ontario and just below the St. Lawrence Seaway. I used to live in Syracuse

General Brown School District is the best in my opinion. It's about 20 minute drive from drum. The cabins on drum are a good place to stay while using TLE.

If you are into places that really suck, then Drum is for you! I retired from there 25 years ago and I am still licking a cats a** trying to get the bad taste of Drum out of my mouth!

I am SO SORRY!
Do what you can to get the orders changed. Fort Drunk isn't a good place to stay even after Watertown building up some and some improvements. The closest large city to do ANYTHING remotely fun at night is around 2 HOURS AWAY. You are the last exit from Canada. Most of the year is cold to not-as-cold.

10th Mountain deploys, a LOT. The other posts on here are absolutely correct. It does get cold. I lived in Ogdensburg, about 45 minutes northeast, for a couple of years. My first time there was in February right after returning from Iraq. I went from Baghdad weather to 4°. There are things to do if you have a family. Sacket's Harbor has Old MacDonald's Farm, and my daughter loved it. When you get snowed in, and you will, the Chinese places in Watertown deliver.

Good luck if you like two things in your military career. Cold or retirement. Drum gave you both to choose from.

I hope you like the cold. When you ask a soldier how long they have been there they will tell you how many winters

By October the weather will start getting cold so I recommend to buy coats, mittens and gloves for you and the kids. There are things to do in the winter if your are an outdoor person and if you like the winter.
