Unless it has changed in the last 20 years....and it may have....all YOU need is your NATO Orders and military ID. That being said, have you had your Levy Brief yet? This should be covered in that brief....or at least answered if you ask(ed). Green US Passport? I only knew if the Blue and the Red (Government) passports for the US.

That’s all we needed when I was in Europe! Of course that’s late 80’s and 90’s!

We were required to get official passports for travel to the Dominican Republic and Colombia.

MSgt (Join to see) the SOFA does not require it for the Service Member, just ID card and NATO orders. the family requires a no fee passport issued through the personnel section where you get your levy brief. The family needs these because they come with a visa to stay for the tour. Otherwise the Germans expect them to leave in 90 days.

The service member may apply through their unit for a maroon official duty passport for TDY travel. I had one for a NATO assignment.

I PCSed as a spouse to Germany in 2013. The kids and I had to have command sponsorship and a SOFA passport (blue-looked like a regular travel passport). Service members can PCS on just orders and DODID. However, you/and or your family will not be able to travel outside of the assigned duty location (country) without a travel passport. Some family members do initally travel with a regular travel passport and get it stamped with the SOFA to allow free travel to and from. Without the SOFA passport or stamp, travelers are considered visitors and only authorized a 90 day stay.

Back in the mid 60's I was single when I was sent to Germany. I was able to travel between countries using my Military ID card whether I traveled in my personal vehicle or by the train system. I took advantage of traveling all over Europe during my 2-1/2 year tour. I'm sure your international passports that your family has will be accepted. Are they flying commercial?
