I am PCSing to Korea in JAN and trying to work my PCS leave. I am wanting to do PTDY in conjunction with the leave. Has anyone done that with a move to Korea or OCONUS PCS in general? I know normally you have to sign in at housing, but I thought I heard that's changed now? Just curious of other people's experience with it.

You do not get PTDY when you PCS to Korea. If you fly Patriot Express, as soon as you arrive you will be bused to Camp Humphreys for inprocessing. If you fly commercial, at Incheon Airport there is an 8th Army desk you should report to for transportation to Camp Humphreys for inprocessing. During inprocessing, you will be instructed to go to Housing for an in brief (you must have this brief before you are allowed to sign a lease). At Housing you will find out if you will live on or off post. If you find you will be living off post, Housing will give you a realtor list. You will need to contact realtors to look at apartments, villas or houses. The realtors will only show you places within your OHA. You will have time in the evenings and weekends to look for Housing while you are at inprocessing and when you arrive at your unit.

Check out this link/pdf for info to help you prepare for your move to Korea and getting settled once you arrive. This info is primarily for Command Sponsored families, but there is some good info for unaccompanied personnel as well. This file also provides info to help you prepare for your PCS back to CONUS or another OCONUS location after your tour here. Link: https://www.army.mil/e2/c/downloads/528329.pdf

CH has been building up, there's adequate housing for families on the installation so your PTDY most likely won't be necessary. I would still ask your sponsor. If you're going unaccompanied on an "All Others or Dependent Restricted Tour" then you'll be in the barracks as a SSG.

Good luck with your move!

I heard SSG unaccompanied still get off post housing at Humphreys. Did they change it?

All unaccompanied tours to OCONUS assignments require SSGs to live in the barracks (unless your MOS mandates an exception to that, like CI or CID).

Mind you, I went from Hawaii, to Germany and that’s how it was. I spent some time TDY to CH earlier this year and all of the unaccompanied SSGs lived in the Bs. No cars, no housing. If you request a command sponsored tour, then you’ll get all of the above (if it’s approved, and that’s dependent on the Army’s need for your MOS, grade, skills etc).

You may want to contact your sponsor or gaining unit’s S1. Is your PTDY for “house hunting” purposes? The biggest issue that I foresee with your PCS to Korea is whether you will be authorized off-base housing. In my past experience in Korea, Camp Walker 2015-2017, as a command sponsored E7 I wasn’t authorized off-base housing because of the on-base housing availability- and subsequently was not authorized PTDY. If I recall correctly, you must sign into housing first and then they will present you the available options - and authorize your PTDY if warranted. Hope this helps.

I was tracking PTDY was for just house hunting as well, but I was told at my levy brief that the regs have changed and you no longer need a stamp from housing. So overseas PTDY is now possible because your losing unit can sign off on it and let you take with your added PCS leave.
