After 4+ years in Active duty, I spent a year and some change in the IRR. My AFS reflects the time not in IRR, but my total service kept running. Essentially I have 6 AFS years and 8 total years. The SFC board that I will be eligible (in theory ) for is SEP16.
My question is, will my total time served be the basis of promotion, or my AFS? If my AFS, I will not be eligible, but the opposite is true for total service.

Also, any tips on preparing my packet? Not just putting it together, but putting it together in such a manner that really shows I care.

Anybody familiar with these contingencies?

*** Update***

I wasn’t eligible until the September (FY17) board and was not considered because- my assigned (active) unit didn’t have access to the right systems to update my records. I had to find a RPAC to service my records but my unit updated my ht/wt data. The ht/wt data didn’t show up to the board and I was ruled ineligible.

I was able to find evidence that it was updated and excepted to a STAB and boarded six months later, backdated to Jan 01 2018.

I saw the suggestions to consult my S1, but none of them (active unit) were familiar with USAR senior enlisted promotions. This was evident after finding that no TPU soldier here had been promoted while in the unit.

In any case, I found an old contact who happened to be a senior enlisted personnel manager and he helped clear up the process.

The regulation gave me a good idea of what was going to happen, but without someone having experience to break it down, I’d probably be a really salty SSG right now.
SFC Retention and Transition NCO (USAR)
This would be a question for your S-1 section, to make sure you have the proper guidance.

I went to the RPAC, they can't say until the board puts out the pre reqs. But it looks like Cumulative time in service plus 36 months TIG for USAR is my answer.
