That's actually not the original flag. It is a mash up of the US and CSA flag. The original flag had 7 stars in a circle and 3 stripes. The starts were later increased to 11 when 4 more states seceded, and then again to 13 when rebel factions of missouri and kentucky were acknowledged even though those two states never seceded.
