I’m a Army Reservist Veteran 92y trying to re-enlist as 12P. I went to Virginia college for Electrical Technician certification but I couldn’t finish because the school shutdown due to losing accreditation. I ETS from the Army reserves in Aug 2017 after I extended 6 months to try to pass my PT test but was unsuccessful. I never received a new DD-214 I was told the Army reserves do not get this upon ETS so I do not know my RE code. Last May I was charged with a DWI I have finished my ASAP class and have paid my court fees and fines. I’m just waiting on my probation to be up in May and pay my reinstatement fee and insurance fees to get my license back. I really want to get back in the Army as an Active Soldier and complete 20 years or more and retire honorably. I talked to a recruiter and career counselor and they both told me I have to wait until probation is up to see if I’m eligible. I just need guidance on what I can do to get back in? Any ideas?

This will be a long road for you, if it is even possible. You must clear all of the hurdles associated with the private sector. Once you have completed all court directed requirements you can then visit the recruiting office heading down a path of waivers associated with your request. You then face the needs of the Army challenge, meaning you will compete for slots with civilians and prior service who do not have records nor codes to contend with. It is not impossible, but it won’t be easy, if it happens. Have a backup plan for life.

Seems like you did what you can. The recruiters will have the best up to date information. Keep it of trouble and keep up your PT.

Private First Class, I admire you. I would suggest you keep your proverbial nose clean; and try volunteering, going back to school, working: anything you can- to get back into the Army. Your goal is a great one! PFC Rayshad Washington

And how many credits did you finish for the electrical tech certification before the school shut down? Did you get a transcript? Can you? Would the credits on the transcript still be any good? Could you transfer to another school? Have you tried at all thus far? Try to get a copy of your mil educ transcript also from either DANTES or the Amer Council on Educ (ACE), it could only help you to have it, for any mil coursework credits you'd be allowed, OK? Were you trying to do your associates? Bachelors? If so, what major? How many credits thus far? What were your grades and/or GPAs at the elec tech program, of you can say? Have you also tried adult voc ed programs, typically allowed for adult students at most voc ed high schools (we have them by us)? If you'd want help with various mil accepted online program, state amr private, I can suggest those for you also, if you'd like, as well...look up the college level exm program (CLEP), DANTES also has such a program that might be linked to CLEP, I've never looked into it all that extensively...I'm here if you'd care to chat further, as I'd said, OK?

This group, NOVA, does VA disability cases, we used them for my whole total perm disability thing after starting with a vet group...I know youre not doing a VA disability thing, however, their guys are all hooked into whole a lot of mil.vet stuff, they can be quite handy to yak with, at their main ofc, or checking their search engine to see who's near you, we had to pay a $500 consult, I don't know in your case, though if their guys near you domt handle such cases, they might know who would...VA also has the Discharge Review Board (DRB), which has traveling teams like the Board of Veteran Appeals (BVA) our NOVA guy got us into see a judge for, DRB stuff def nds an attorney, that's def not amateur night, trust me on thatz look up DRB, I don't know if it'd be applicable in your case, obv, however, I just figured if you didn't know about it or NOVA, such stuff might at least possibly be of use, you know? I'd be most eager for your thoughts, no rush, if you'd ever care to chat whenever convenient, hope is of some use, of course....

I follow...please understand, I realize why that might perhaps be your initial reaction, I merely suggested NOVA as their attorneys are all generally quite well informed, plus, I didn't know, as I'd said, if the DRB was relevant to your circumstances, I'd only intended all of that as purely an FYI, in the hope any of it might perhaps be of any use...as for the DD214 aspect you'd mentioned, if you don't yet have your records, go on the eVetRecs website of the Natl Personnel Records Ctr (NPRC) of the Natl Archives and Records Admin (NARA), NPRF is in St. Louis, fill out the Java applet on the website, there isn't much room on the Java applet, so you might well have to abbreviate a good deal, ask for both your personnel as well as !ed/dent records, you can get both, you just need to ask explicitly for copies of each, then print out the form from the eVetRecs website with the submission request code, save it, scan it in, or on your cell phone, if you oose the number, the NPRC staff in St. Louis won't be able to find it, the records are free, ask them for your DD214, attach a cover Petter explaining your circumstances as you listed them above, you'll need to wait till you get an acknowledgment letter, typically a couple of weeks, then your stuff should all show up in a month or two, the area code there is 314, I forget the switchboard phone, just do a Google search, you should find it easily, the staff there are quite helpful, we've gotten records from them, my wife and I, for myself and family, multiple times, if your DD214 had to be corrected, you can get supervisors or managers there on the phone, we've had me call them many times, they're extremely responsive, I assure you....about the legal things you'd mentioned, I'm assuming that stuff happened after you'd gotten off active, while youve been a Reservist, that's why I didn't know if you might possibly need to submit for a discharge review and.or upgrade at all, which I'd known the DRB gets involved with, though there are attorneys who handle such cases, I didn't know also if you'd need any kind of waovers at all, which was why I'd suggested NOVA, as their attorneys often know who handles such types of cases in a given area...as I'd said, it was purely meant as FYI, honest...I hope all that at least explains why I'd sent it, if I can try to explain anything more that might be of any help, I'd certainly be glad to chat further anytime, by all means...finally, I didn't know if you'd be eligible to register for the VA eBenefits site, or their VONAPP site, there's also the myHealtheVet site,!that's their clinical one...you'd have to do remote proofing online to be able to use eBenefits Level 2, eBenefits is linkable to the other two sites, eBenefits is run by DMDC/DSO/DEERS, there are toll free phones for the VA side, as well as the DMDC/DSO/DEERS staff, if you can register for eBenefits, a DD214 can be downloaded as a PDF, whether it'd be the corrected one you seek or not, obviously I have no idea, I merely thought to explain all that as well, just in case it'd also be useful, eBenefits Level 1 doesn't need remote proofing I think,
Level 2 definitely does, the VA hospitals used to be able to do eBemefis Level 2, that was switched to online a few yrs ago, the VA hospitals can only do Level 2 now for myHealtheVet, VONAPP so far as I know, needs no remote proofing to set up an account on it...I'd also seek help from all three of your Congressional ofcs, the local staffs handle such vet/mil related stuff, they can send inquires, you just need to fill out their Privacy Act (PA) for!s before they can help you, that's just Federal law...believe me, I've been around a good many bureaucratic blocks over a very long period, please trust !e, all the stuff I gave you, I gave for a reason, I assure you, I realize it might not have been what you'd been expecting to hear, however, I assure you, that you will most definitely find it of genuine use, promise...last, dome forget to see if there are any law schools near you, they quite frequently in many cases have what are termed vet law clinics, run by law students under faculty supervision, where vets can often try to seek free pro bono help, not all law schools have them, they also can't take every case, that's up to faculty, not the students, however, it's merely another possible suggestion you might care to look into as well, OK?
