Every service has one (or a couple dozen) of "rules" that "everyone" knows but somehow you can never find where they are actually written down.

What are some of yours?

Shouldn't number 3 be: the most dangerous weapon TO the US Army is a 2lt with a compass and map?

I had graduated basic training at Ft McClellan about 10 months before this incident and my drill sgt told me whenever I am in the field to wear my steel pot on my head. Yes, this was a long time ago.
While I was stationed at Ft Carson, Colorado I was invited to go into the field and shadow some of my soldiers so I could gain a better understanding of their jobs, job conditions and whatever else was influencing them. I met with the captain and we went to the mess tent for chow. He instructed me that it was not necessary to wear my steel pot in the mess tent. I had just finished putting my steel pot aside when one of the heavy side support poles fell and hit me upside the head. My hard head did no harm to that pole. The pole bounced off of my head. I haven't heard words used like that since.

This pissed me off years ago at Mountain Home AFB. Our squadron Ops and MX moved to a new building while we were deployed to Korea. A few months after we came home, I came to work to find no less than half of the parking lot, covered with bright orange parking curbs. Half of those had specific jobs on them: Weapons officer, A Flight commander, B Flight commander, Scheduling NCOIC. The rest of the spots just said "OPS". I immediately made it a point to take ANY open "reserved" spots I could find, even if the MX lot had available spots. I even had a note on my car one day, saying that the spot was reserved for some MSgt who thought she was hot shit. I then made it a point to park in HER spot as often as I could. Why? Because per regs, only brown placards are officially reserved parking spots, not your stupid orange curbs. If I hadn't PCS'd, I'd still be parking in that MSgt's spot.

I think its more of a courtesy thing for soldiers. Someone may not want to be look upon by their peers if they potentially may fail a PT test. I would say that let everyone turn around and try to motivate someone. It builds unit cohesion to cheer others on.

Sounds like BS to me because you would miss many funny things. Everyone laughed their butts off watching me hurl my guts up on the 40 yard low crawl after being out all night celebrating my birthday on Hauptstrasse in downtown Berlin.

After I retired I drove OTR flatbed and oversize loads for 16 years.I was making a delivery (military vehicle) to the Military Port Charleston SC once and a young 2Lt would not allow me to pull straight in and backup to the dock to unload. He directed me down this short dirt strip to a 90 degree turn and then another 90 degree turn into the dock area. Well I told my wife who was riding along there is going to be on highly PO'd Sgt Maj I just put this heavy load on his pretty grass, bumper to bumper I was about 75 feet long. He must have been watching out the window. I saw a green flash that reached the dock before I got to it. I never saw that Lt at the port again and drivers were pulling straight in and backing up to the dock the way it have been done.

I transferred from Castle AFB Ca to Eglin AFB Fl in 1977 and the day I moved in to family housing the CMSGT from Civil Engineers was inpsecting the housing area to see who had not cut their grass. It was raining like crazy and we are moving in and it is obvious. Anyway this "Intelligent E-9" writes me up no, verbal communication, I guess he was afraid he would get wet. He said nothing at all to me. A few days later a letter comes down to me through channels about my grass for that particular day. I worked for a LtCol and a Full Colonel who was an F-4 Pilot in Vietnam. He and I had talked quite a long time when I first arrived in the unit. I took the letter to him he and I had been in Nam at the same time and I told it probably not a good idea for me to visit the Chief and he agreed and handled it. I never had another problem for the next two years I was there.

You can add to but cannot take away.

Open up FM/Regulation to signature page and read it. You can't do either without an ETP.

As I recall, the AAM was supposed to replace the Certificate of Achievement when something more was deserved but not the ARCOM. Guess what...It did in a lot of cases, but it also resulted in more people getting the award until it became kind of meaningless. I had a CSM buddy with several MSMs plus a Silver Star offered another MSM at retirement. He said he didn't intend to go to the ceremony and if that was all they thought his career was worth, give him a AAM because he didn't have one of those. I had six MSMs, and paid no attention to my 7th at retirement. What you get is equally a reflection of what you've done, how well the guy recommending you writes, and what the board thinks of you both. So, since you've got no real control over it, do your job as well as it can be done, take care of your people and don't care about the bullshit. Be proud of your service and fuck 'em if they can't take a joke.
