In my time in the Army, I've seen different leaders run their ranges differently--some more safely, effectively, and efficiently than others.

Having lead and participated in several AARs, usually it isn't until conclusion of a range operation that many insightful comments come out....that a good leader will take note of and apply to future operations.

What specific things have you done and/or learned while you were tasked with running a rifle range (zero and/or qual)?

What was your role? (OIC, NCOIC, AI, Tower, etc...)

What went well?

What went not-so-well?

Tell us about the "best" and/or "worst" range that you ran, and what deliberate planning steps and actions made it that way.

I know this is leadership-101, but I think it is important that EVERYONE in any sort of position knows EXACTLY what is expected of them and that they know HOW to execute that expectation. I like to utilize back-briefs, return demonstrations, etc.

Always keep your weapon oriented down range, have your weapon rodded (spelling) on and off the range, fire at your own targets and always move with a purpose when moving up and down range.

Weeks ago @1LT Eric Rosa was talking about rankingsm, also, weeks ago, I started exactly the same discussion because, as an armorer, I had a Range. Results, weeks later, I had just 1 response inviting me to a new discussion to learn about what I already asked but nobody answered. Well, I think a little time off here will help me understand how this works... I guess the "Search" option is not that helpful.

Are you answering the question of just griping? No one mentioned your prior topic. Got it. You'll survive this injustice.

Prior to posting this thread, RallyPoint offered me a list of other threads, and asked if the 'question' had been asked before. Perhaps this function of RallyPoint could be improved upon, but even with words like "QUAL" or "ZERO" or "RANGE"...even "RIFLE", nothing remotely related showed up. This function is akin to a search function...or at least that was my impression...and, I used it as such.

Here were the options: (I did a cut/paste of the this same thread title...)

"Running a Rifle Qual or Zero Range: Secrets? Best Practices? Lessons Learned?"

--Selling a Home in Northern VA - any lessons learned, secrets, or referrals?
--The military has a zero tolerance for drug use. I would like to hear your lessons learned.
--Are we ignoring a decade of lessons learned?
--Lessons Learned from Operation Iraqi Freedom

....and, if you don't see something remotely related to your question/thread title, RallyPoint prompts you to post to it with a button that says "my question is new". When compared to the most closely related topics/threads that RallyPoint serves up--4 of them, in fact--my question was "new".
