Russian Su-24M communications equipment blamed for shootdown

The crew of the Russian Sukhoi Su-24M 'Fencer' strike aircraft downed by Turkey on 23 November may not have been able to hear radio warnings issued by the Turkish Air Force, Russian sources tell IHS Jane's .

Turkish authorities have stated that the aircraft was warned 10 times within a five-minute period. However, the surviving crewmember told Russian media on 25 November that he and the aircraft commander, who was shot from the ground while parachuting, did not receive the signal.

Russian specialists familiar with the R-862 model VHF radio installed on the Su-24M say it requires an optional add-on receiver module in order to receive emergency channel transmissions in the ultra-high frequency (UHF) and very high frequency (VHF) bands.

I'd suspect if a module was needed, there're 3 possibilities. They had it but didn't monitor. They had it, monitored, and ignored, or they didn't have it. If they didn't have it, there was a reason besides a mistake. Far more likely the Russian brass were baiting the Turks with their pilots unwitting pawns. Very typical of their mindset. Putin is a master of "Rope-A-Dope".

They had to explain somehow why that aircraft did not heed warnings on the "guard" frequency used by everyone for exactly this reason. With multiple nations conducting air operations over Syria, this is negligent in the extreme. And it doesn't explain how the pilot got into Turkish airspace in the first place.
While striking ethnic Turks in the Free Syrian Army, by the way.

So now it was the equipment's fault.
Communications issues is not why that aircraft forgot how to navigate. I stand by my assertion that this was no accident.

Interesting, as it seems the Ruskies are going to play the "we didn't know card." This will allow them to do that without calling the Turks liars. Seems to me the Ruskies are one of the few that could deescalate a situation by claiming not to have had proper equipment.
