DoD proposals are suggesting scrapping the "with dependents" rates under the current BAH program, moving instead to a simpler, flatter benefit that makes no distinction between single service members and those with families.

What are your thoughts about a universal BAH (based on locality) for single/married service members?

I disagree unless they increase the BAH for single people.  A lot of military people with families are living off of the one income alone because it is difficult for military spouses to have careers.  Doing something like this would only increase the number of military families on WIC and food stamps, etc.

Or just decrease the number of families who stay in the military.

We have accession policies in place to limit enlistment of those who would experience financial hardship in the service. Those policies would be simple to adjust.

I have always thought that the Army paying my rent/mortgage was too good to be true. It wouldn't be a surprise to me if we lose it completely someday.

Just don't see how this could work. If the single rate goes up so be it I guess, but it would be wasting money. Just sounds like a plan to lower BAH across the board to me. We will see I guess.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but I could see DOD using such a redesign as a vehicle to reduce BAH rates across the board.  Such a redesign has been reported in the Army Times within the last 3 or 4 weeks.  BAH would be a huge raise for single soldiers but if it is implemented in concert with reduction in BAH rates that would really hurt many military families particularly the enlisted.
