My son just took the ASVAB today and scored a 96. Apparently did not do well on mechanical but did well otherwise.
I don't know how these things are scored. Is 96 a good score? Will this help his chances of getting in to Army OCS, which is his ultimate goal?

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, he got a 132 for GT score. Apparently that is important?

A GT score of 110 will get you almost any MOS in the Army. If your son's recruiter can't get him the position he wants, tell him to hold out until they can. He's a commodity.
That ASVAB score of 96 is out of 99, so he can pick what he wants, within reason.

SPC (Join to see) - maybe less choices but better choices!!! basic training is 7 weeks. I had my choice of MOS. of course, my recruiter and meps screwed me by telling me I couldn't go into law enforcement because I wear glasses

SrA John Monette - haha aint that a lie....I have friends who recently joined the AF...from what I understand mostly its upon the needs of the AF, unless it happens your passion is mechanics which there is a lot...otherwise you'd have to wait, but recruiters often try to pressure recruits to do it asap so they get their quota. Army is mainly based on your score, but also depends on whats available, lots of people need something NOW and go ahead with something they dislike, few will wait (although they will say theres deadlines...so you have to do it again)

SrA John Monette - yes...the one minutes....and 1.5 mile....and 7 weeks.....you are lucky you got a mos you like. itd say army have more different choices...AF is more like, you know what u want and wait for it...or based on needs..depends on how open one is open for choices

Awesome, my daughter recently commissioned. She had a BS in Business Administration with a 3.2 GPA. She started the process last September. Took a PT test and got a 247, got her Letters of Recommendation and went to MEPS. Went to basic training in February and completed OCS in August and is currently in BOLC. She is doing well and her last 3 PT tests have been 300+. It was quite a simple process for her and her Recruiter did his part in keeping the process moving. This is a good time to apply as they are trying to grow the force.

96 is really good..he can get any job he wants, highly recommend going directly to OCS, don't waste the talent, recruiters don't get much people with such high ASVAB so they will fight for it, but you getta realize that and play your cards make sure you get everything you want that Is out there, because what is and isn't in your contact matters and cant be altered down the road....mechanical wont matter unless he wants to do mechanical jobs, GT score is the only one matters and 132 is REALLY good.
GPA does not matter as much in the army until you transition out for federal or civilian jobs...it matters a bit in promotions but not as much, its still mainly his Army achievements and education/skills...APFT is important too so If he got that down hes got nothing to worry about..have fun, think deep, plan far and make good decisions, that's what army is all about really...best of luck to your son!

He absolutely can go in straight as an officer. He will technically be enlisted as an officer candidate, as an e-5 pay grade, and will be commissioned upon completion of OCS. Attrition for an reason will put him in as enlisted in an MOS under the needs of the Army with a hint of his preference.
When you say a 96.... Is that his overall score? I THINK (not sure) that his overall score doesn't matter, just his GT score being above 110 does. If he got a 96 overall his gt is most likely well above 110 but double check just to be sure.
Aside from his asvab, strong recommendation letters, good to great GPA, and high apft score ( I'd say minimum 270) and he'll make a strong candidate.

Yes -- 96 was his overall score. His GT score was 132. Recruiter was enthusiastically remarking that he hit everything out of the park except for mechanical.
He's very lean and fit so I am guessing his APFT will be good as well but he hasn't done that yet.
The college GPA is his weak point. He didn't take his studies very seriously and now regrets that, but is determined to "be all that he can be" in the Army.

2.5-3.0 and he'll have an ok shot if everything else looks good.
3.0 and up and he's good.
For what I assume to be his age, he should strive for a 13:30 2 mile run, 70 push ups, 75 sit-ups. The more the merrier. The army emphasizes physical fitness. Something I miss.
As far as his clearance goes it's more credit history and foreign relations based than anything else.

Joe gets in trouble and isn't equipped to handle his own business because Mom always sorts things out for him. None of the stakeholders are happy as it is really Joe and his chain of command that need to settle the issue. You rig it, you ride it.

96 is VERY good. ASVAB is scored on a percentile scale so a 96 puts you in the top 4%.

a 90+ is a good score, opens up a lot of jobs in the army. As SPC Zane Fuhrmann pointed out, he is going to need some time in service before he will be able to attend OCS, what MOS he chooses will not effect his OCS packet. good luck to him.

He doesn't have to go enlisted and then officer (green to gold.) He can enlist as an officer if he wants. I'm not an officer so I don't know a lot of information on it, but he should go to a recruiter station and ask them. They can give him more information on how to go Officer.

Patricia McIntosh-Mize - is he a college grad? not being rude, but you did not mention that in the original post - so the answers some of us gave are based upon our experiences, which is, he just finishing High School, took the asvab, and has ideas about OCS.
