Who does it? According to the new AR670-1, SM has to be clean shaven while in uniform or in civilian attire while On Duty. Thing is, I've heard many SNCO's say that even off duty you have to be clean shaven. What is your input in this matter? Do you shave while on leave or on the weekends?
I usually don't shave on weekends or on leave, and I live On Post. I've been downrange for the past 10 months so the new AR 670-1 came out while I was out here. Don't know if a CSM is gonna come and chew my butt out for not shaving on a Saturday coming out of the PX lol.

Aren't there rally more pressing issues to determine? The reason given for clean shave is for NBC, doubt that it will be an issue on leave, but if it is, then...shave!!!

straight out of the reg, nothing about shaving on leave

Males will keep their face clean-shaven when in uniform, or in civilian clothes on duty. Mustaches
are permitted. If worn, males will keep mustaches neatly trimmed, tapered, and tidy. Mustaches will not present a
chopped off or bushy appearance, and no portion of the mustache will cover the upper lip line, extend sideways beyond
a vertical line drawn upward from the corners of the mouth (see lines C and D of Figure 3–1), or extend above a
parallel line at the lowest portion of the nose (see line B of Figure 3–1). Handlebar mustaches, goatees, and beards are
not authorized. If appropriate medical authority allows beard growth, the maximum length authorized for medical
treatment must be specific. For example, “The length of the beard cannot exceed 1/4 inch” (see Training Bulletin
Medical (TB Med) 287). Soldiers will keep the growth trimmed to the level specified by the appropriate medical
authority, but are not authorized to shape the hair growth (examples include, but are not limited to goatees, “Fu
Manchu,” or handlebar mustaches).

I have not located it in the new AR. If SGT Keen can point out the chapter/paragraph, that would be awesome. However, the Commanding General of an installation has the authority to make that call and have it binding on military, family members and civilians. Fort Bliss is one of those places. Hence the active Courtesy Patrols to ensure both military, family members and civilians (as it is a partially open post) are dressed and groomed appropriately. We were briefed on this when I went through Bliss for CRC processing.

Okay so after reading CH (MAJ) (Join to see)'s comment I went back into the AR. Again, it's about making sure the information on here is accurate so I wanted to double check myself.

As always the Army leaves a little to interruption in the way it wrote the regulation. While Chapter 3 Section 3-1 Paragraph A states "Soldiers will present a professional image at all times and will continue to set the example in military presence,
both on and off duty. Pride in appearance includes Soldiers’ physical fitness and adherence to acceptable weight
standards in accordance with AR 600–9." Section 3-2 Paragraph a2 states "Males will keep their face clean-shaven when in uniform, or in civilian clothes on duty."

So while I was incorrect in saying the regulation you must be clean-shaven 24/7 the regulation leaves room.

The question becomes, was this young Soldier on or off duty? As an Active Duty Service Member, it is my understanding that you are on duty unless on leave status. If the SM wasn't on leave then I would side with the SSG. Again, this is just how I read the regulation.

A AR or a post commander doesnt have the authority to tell civillians they must be clean shaven. Dressed appropiatly yes, but not shaven.

if its the weekend and you are in civillian clothes and are not on any type of duty then you do not have to shave till the next time you are on duty, which is more than likely Monday formation.

Thanks SGT Keen, I was reading the same thing. It was discussed two years ago when they were working the update and you ask a good question on the situation. SPC Williams, thank you for the correction, I forgot to mention that civilians were exempt from the grooming standards.

The new AR states all active duty service members and those on active status must have a fresh shave everyday including while on leave.

Old AR 670-1 allowed for soldiers to not shave when on leave or off duty, depending upon command guidance/policy. As of 31 MAR 2014, the revised and updated AR 670-1 leaves no wiggle room. All soldiers on active duty will be clean shaven on/off duty and while on leave.

1LT (Join to see) If you can please tell me the chapter and paragraph where it states, that you must be clean shave during leave that will be much appreciated. I sure can't find it and I checked, double checked, and tripple checked and there is nothing that states that. *****"Males will keep their face clean-shaven when in uniform, or in civilian clothes on duty"*****. Mustaches are permitted. If worn, males will keep mustaches neatly trimmed, tapered, and tidy. Mustaches will not present a chopped off or bushy appearance, and no portion of the mustache will cover the upper lip line, extend sideways beyond a vertical line drawn upward from the corners of the mouth

SSG Alfonso. I appreciate the check. I cannot find anything upon inspection and have no explanation other than this being guidance given at a BDE NCOPD.

Maybe they were taking the 'rumored' changes as accepted with the release of the new 670-1.

ETA: I'm honestly happy about this because I have been killing my face with needless shaves. Thanks again!

Off topic, but rank is either/or. A Cadet belongs to ROTC, while a 2LT is a result of a successfully comissioning. Let's be accurate in our representations.

1SG (Join to see) I agree, it's a little confusing. Indeed, on paper I am a cadet (CDT). However, :within: ROTC there are rank designations depending upon the billet (ie. MTOE) you fill within the battalion. Team leaders are Cadet SGTs, squad leaders Cadet SSG, platoon sergeants Cadet SFC, platoon leaders, Cadet 2LT, etc. all the way up to Cadet LTC or Cadet COL depending upon how big the ROTC battalion/brigade is. Here is a graphic representation: http://www.hawaii.edu/armyrotc/images/rank/cadetRanks.gif Westpoint does theirs a little different as well. When I was active we had a cadet for CTLT that was a company XO at USMA and her insignia had three horizontal lines.
