Just trying to get everyone’s opinion. But recently went on a Europe Rotation and had several soldiers in the battalion fall of the manifest because they claimed suicidal ideations the day before the flight. This was 7 months ago and when the battalion came back many of those Soldiers were just hanging out on rear d. None have had any sort of chapter initiated. Any thoughts on what should happen?

I would think that a unit would not leave its best and brightest on a rear detachment. Mostly oddballs and screwups. So there may not have been anyone with either the authority or smarts to chapter. Their purpose is to look after the company area, security, beautification, etc. Not a lot of smarts to cut grass, paint rocks, etc

In every unit I have been in, great care when in to selecting Rear D 1SGs and CDRs. My last unit went so far as to call it a "Ready Force" because they wanted to emphasize that all personnel left bCk (or arriving to the unit after everyone had deployed) should be prepared to go forward at a moment's notice. And if they weren't ready their entire focus was to GET ready. Whether that was physical therapy, fixing home life, or completing mandatory theater training, those Soldiers' mission was to get ready to deploy. If they could not, the Rear D 1SG's mission was to make sure the folks who deployed didn't have to see their face when they got back. WTU, PCS or Chapter, but either way, not in the unit anymore.

Deployed 3 times with a unit and each time, the people left I charge for Rear D were fully competent. Stayed back on Rear D twice. The first, the Rear D folks were not too competent. I had to spend a LOT of time explaining BASIC S2 stuff (I was running BDE S2 on Rear D) including "if you have a clearance that is expiring, filing a periodic reinvestigation is not optional" and "yes, arms rooms need to be checked during security checks, even if the unit deployed with all of their M4s. There are still other sensitive items in there."

The second ti.e, I was the Rear D 1SG. And we chaptered a LOT of folks. We also deployed about 20 forward after getting them SRP cleared.

A smart unit may not leave its absolute best and brightest. But they *are* leaving someone in the top 5.
