- Short answer: yes.
- Long answer: yes for several reasons:
- Human domain. Social media use by COCOMs is one way to operate within the human domain.
- Human dimension. Social media use by COCOMs is one way to shape the human dimension.
- Non kinetic fires. Social media has now become another way to use non kinetic fires.
- Level of war. COCOMs by definition are operating at the strategic level of war and using the six joint phases of an operation. The mission of the US Army is to shape, deter, and defeat (most people only focus upon the last portion of the mission). If a COCOM can properly shape a theater through social media then they should and must.
- Our enemy. Our enemy is engaging via social media. Why on earth would we unilaterally disarm within this sphere of operation?
- 24/7 media outlets. I would not recommend listening to the 24/7 media outlets and their pundits. Most do not know any more about fighting than the do about fu*&^$% (GEN Patton quote in a speech to his forces on 5 JUN 44). It applied to journelists then. It applies to journalists now.

It doesn't seem awful but at the same time the specter of disaster seems to loom large.

Picture if you will:

"Allies to the rescue! We're coming France! #EggsIn1Basket #AdolfDontTweet"
Tweeted by @BigIke 03:44 06/06/1944

Not that Ike would've done that. The Pvt. turned secretary with a poor grasp of sarcasm running the account on the other hand . . .

And what happens when Air Combat Command tweets, "3 more tons of goods for ISIS! #Boom"?

That said, I'm all for it. This could turn out extremely entertaining.
