Should I cancel my disability before I know for sure I'm going to be able to re-enlist?

My recruiter just told me that it'd be a 50/50 chance that the commander would allow me back in, but he said he couldn't send them any paperwork until I've cancelled my disability.

But here is the rub of a question: What if you cancel your disability and then get told that you can't come back in?

I was told that if I do, it'd be very difficult to regain the benefits if I don't get back in which is why they said to make sure I'm allowed back in first.

Oye.... mental image of the scales... on one hand, a nominal disability check...depending on the percentage, possible retirement instead... with full medical for life.... on the other hand... the chance to remain in the military... that's tough.
Can only state what I would do, which is probably take the disability, as its a sure thing... the re up is not a sure thing. Just saying.

That's a hard decision. I wouldn't cancel disability and stick with what you have. My opinion

I don't have an answer for you Brother, but I'm SOOO glad to see someone correcting a decision that I really, really, wish I could, still.

Have you tried. I tried with the navy and the recruiter just stopped talking to out of the blue. A lot of my friends in the AF pretty much recruited me. Lol.

I do not want to accuse recruiters of lying, I would vet and re vet before you canx. anything. Speak to your PCP and MH doc first, they would know best, as they are very familiar with the recruitment criteria, especially since you are prior service.

i was originally 10%, after 2009, based on that i was no show at hearing, well was at ft irwin at the time, after i retired 2014, and began the the paper shuffle, 14 months i waited was given 50%, so if you get accepted cancel your disabillity, or you will pay it back, but if you dont get accepted you may have to deal with the wait from the va if you cancel ahead of time

So you were able to get yours again? That's a good sign that it's not impossible. Thanks.

Interesting question. You have to deny or waive your disability to come back onto active duty? Make sure that the paperwork does not need an MD signature on this. Would hate for you to be waiting for that signature and the opportunity go by. Good luck on future plans.

I'll have to waive it, which I'll do with no hesitation. It's just that the VA has told me to wait until I know I'm going back in to file the paperwork because that's the easiest of processes to do.
