Should our country and military get out of the business of Nation building? Adopt a war doctrine of attack, destroy and leave.

Our military is great at doing their jobs, however the civilian leadership has never been good at nation building since Korean War (i.e. Vietnam, Iraq, Afganistan, etc). We sacrifice alot in blood and money nation building. If we ever have to go to war again, it should be conducted like the gulf war. Overwhelming force (not just enough), destroy their military and regime change, set them back 100 years and then leave, with them knowing we will be back if necessary. this will give every country second thoughts about messing with our security. wars would be a year or two and accomplish the same thing in the end.

The problem is that we do not get to decide who, what, where or when. We go when told and we do what we are told; attack and destroy or nation build. Part of the reason we awe the world is because we can attack and destroy but can also bring hope in our wake.

I agree with 1SG-go in, take names, and leave them a beating that they will never forget. Unforunately, people want to fight smart wars.
Teddy Roosevelt had it right-Speak softly and carry a big stick. Our big stick is our military, and many people will argue we aren't the biggest, maybe not the best equipped (I say Marine Corps here as they are the most underfunded branch in the entire military), but we sure do have a fighting spirit that has been unmatched since the Revolutionary War. We are smart, and at the core, we care about the man or woman to our six. And they have our back as well. Simply put-unbeatable. We ve had our ups and down, but we are the big stick.
USE IT-not words.

WWI is the reason we have this policy of rebuilding. The common thinking is that if we would have helped rebuild Germany after WWI, Hitler would never have risen to power. Im no expert, but in a nut shell the dilapidated state of Germany made it prime picking for a nut job to be there savior. When people are starving and poor they will follow anyone who has a "dream" no matter how violent or stupid it is. I know this doesnt really answer your question directly just shedding a little light on the reason why we do it.
