Should SFCs leave SLC with an associate's degree?
Sergeant Major Course students do not arbitrarily 'leave with a degree' and never will...it's an accreditation/requirement thing.
SSG T, "shouldn't the CSM be as educated as the commander that he is advising?"
The Command Sergeant Major's position as senior enlisted advisor to the Commander regarding morale, welfare, training....Ie Soldier Shit! They aren't discussing which book they liked best in college. The CSM is in that position to bring the vast knowledge and experience of the leadership time that he or she has in front of Soldiers to assist the commander in making the decisions of command.
Officers, they are a Platoon Leaders for 12-24 months, Company Commanders for another 18 months maybe a couple of more and then if they are really lucky they get their Battalion Command or higher. How many years is that? Four years of leadership command experiance before they are Battalion commanders.
Between leadership positions or command, they are staff officers.
As NCOs, we have been leading Soldiers from the young team leader position for a year or two, then we move up squad leader a year or more later. We stay a squad leader for two or three years and then we get a "break" and go to a battle staff position or even better, Drill Sergeant. While in that position, all we want is to be back in front of Soldiers. Then we get to be a platoon Sergeant for three years or more and we hope and pray that we are lucky enough to be selected for Master Sergeant and then First Sergeant. Three years as a First Sergeant and we sacrifice live chickens around the raging fire light and full moon praying that we are selected for Sergeant Major, while still wearing the Diamond!
I had 17 years of leadership experience when I called "Fall in" the first time as a First Sergeant. I would say that we as Noncommissioned Officers should worry about getting into those leadership positions and perfecting our trade, so that we can advise and counsel our Lieutenants, Commanders and Battalion Commanders on how to take care of the Troops. You can't learn that in College.
